Network Rail has won the Spotlight Net Zero Pioneer Award for its innovative ‘hedgehog’ sleeper design. Made from 90% recycled materials, the KLP® Hybrid Polymer "Hedgehog" Track Sleeper lasts twice as long as concrete sleepers, reduces carbon emissions, and can be replaced mechanically for quicker installation. The sleepers, which resemble hedgehogs beneath the rails, are expected to roll out in early 2026. They contain 90% less carbon than wooden sleepers and 78% less than concrete ones, potentially reducing carbon emissions by 24.5 million kg annually if used to replace concrete sleepers. This #innovation aligns with Network Rail's goal of reducing carbon emissions in #railway #infrastructure. The design has been praised for its sustainability and potential to transform #rail #transport.

#railway / #BahnBubble : does anyone have helpful, firsthand Info on rail travel in Iraq? Specifically, we are thinking about going from Hille to Basra, and then back to Baghdad.

EDIT: we'll most probably be taking the train from Basra to Baghdad on Monday. I'll be live-blogging (in German) in the long thread about this journey)

Today's historic photo of the day: Exactly 40 years ago today, Australian National (AN) 930 class Alco-engined diesel locomotive no 964 in AN green and gold livery runs in the triple-gauge #railway yard at Peterborough, SA, April 11 1985.

If I've got the location right, this is a standard gauge loco and it is traversing a diamond crossing over a dual gauge track of broad and narrow gauges making that a triple gauge diamond with 1435, 1600 and 1067mm gauges.

Today's historic photo of the day: A phalanx of signs greets travellers on the northbound platform of the #railway station at Harden, NSW, October 26 1985.

Harden station, 385km from Sydney on the NSW main South line, was in 1985 served by the Intercapital Daylight and Spirit of Progress between Sydney and Melbourne, and the Riverina XPT between Sydney and Albury. Connecting passenger trains on the cross-country line from here to Young and Cowra had ceased just less than two years beforehand.
