2/2🧵 The #MortonArboretum is located in #Lisle #Illinois, a far suburb of #Chicago. It was established in 1922 by Mr. Joy Morton, the founder of the #MortonSalt company. Morton's father was J. Sterling Morton, who founded #ArborDay in 1872.

The #Arboretum is comprised of over 1,700 acres of land. All of the trees and plants are carefully chosen and tended by expert staff.

With my heel spurs and arthritis, hiking is nearly impossible, so this was a lovely way to enjoy the woodlands and the many colors of the season.

1/2🧵 This past Friday afternoon was spent driving through one of several long routes in the #MortonArboretum in #Lisle, #Illinois. The fall colors and scenic tree varieties along the nine-mile route were beautiful, and my camera phone could not do them justice.

The two-head #sculpture is "Of The Earth" by artist #OlgaZiemska. The heads were "created from reclaimed and pruned tree branches and other natural materials gathered from various locations throughout the Arboretum’s 1,700 acres.“

@Blort very important issue. Saving mature trees is critical yet home owners towns and states cut down mature #trees that can otherwise regenerate when properly managed by #arborists. Not enough time and #education is focused on preserving mature trees which maintain a huge network of underground life and connectivity within the earth, surrounding plants and #wildlife. They are the lifeblood of our ecosystem. Walk among them and you feel Life itself. #SaveTheTrees #oaktrees #mapletrees

Older #trees are able to accelerate their rates of absorbing planet-warming emissions, scientists at University of Birmingham found. A forest of mature #oaktrees was exposed to elevated levels of #carbondioxide for seven years and in response, the trees increased their production of #wood - locking in the #greenhousegas and preventing it from #warming the planet. It is estimated that globally a football field of primary #forest is lost every six seconds. #climatecrisis bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1d7p0
