Happy birthday to chemist William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)! This #lino block print ‘William Henry Perkin Discovers Mauve’ is about how the British chemist & entrepreneur made the serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.

Perkins entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 when he was only 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann. 🧵1/n

#introduction post! I'm rootrambler, a #landscape designer, #writer and #maker

I'm interested in the history of collective land use, peasant customs/resistance, farming, hunting and gathering, and foraging. Interested in dye, fiber, and food plants Hoping to use this platform to share what I'm reading/learning!

#Mice made transparent with a #dye used in #Doritos
Stanford scientists has found an agent that can reversibly make skin transparent without damaging it. #Tartrazine, a popular yellow-orange food dye called FD&C Yellow 5 is notably used for coloring Doritos. Hong’s team dissolved the dye in an aqueous solution and created a transparency-inducing lotion of sorts. It worked, because the dye reduced the difference in refractive index between water and lipids in the skin.

The dye in Doritos can make mice transparent
'It’s not magic, but it’s still very powerful.'

A food dye that helps give certain sodas and snacks their hallmark orange hue renders mouse skin almost completely see-through in a reversible, potentially non-toxic research method that could transform medical and scientific imaging. Because of a counterintuitive fundamental physics principle, Tartrazine, also known as Yellow 5, can temporarily turn biological tissue transparent to the naked eye, as described in a study published September 5 in the journal Science.

Uh, don't try this at home...

The canal has a leak, about 20 boat lengths from mine, under the railroad. There was a large puddle in the road.

A better photo would have included the canal on the right side.

Canal & River Trust workers are pumping liquid dye into the ground, and leaning over the fence to see where it leaks out.

"Don't worry, we'll fix it" said one of them.

I heard from a neighbour the leak has been there a while.

A little exploration, hand sanding to check grain fill, any more required? The face became flat ALARMINGLY fast. I'd been hoping for a lot more texture than has actually survived the sanding. Grain appears filled at least where I sanded.

Dyed a little to see how that'd go on the ash with the black contrast. I'm happy with the colour.

Seeing it in this state, now wondering about only dyeing the front, leaving sides/back black.

Hmmm, decisions. 🤔

Very close to a clear coat.

Many experiments later (which won't be inflicted upon Mastodon) getting closer to something I like.

Koepoe Koepoe Merah Tua dye makes the colour I want to look at.

Tried on scrap, and sprayed a super heavy clear coat (runs/bubbles) just to see what it looks like under clear.

I also bought sanding sealer, so at some point must audition the whole process, sanding sealer, sand back, dye, clear coat.

I might go black paint as the grain contrast.
