Sam Whited<p>I just applied for a scholarship to the John C. Campbell Folk School for their traditional dance callers week. Not something I had on my bingo card for this year, but apparently I was recommended for it by someone in the local contra scene and invited to apply, so why not? I've always thought it would be fun to learn to call properly (I've only ever done it at open-mic type dances and workshops)!</p><p><a href="https://folkschool.configio.com/pd/3104/dance-callers-week" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">folkschool.configio.com/pd/310</span><span class="invisible">4/dance-callers-week</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/Contra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Contra</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/ContraDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ContraDance</span></a></p>
Harris Lapiroff<p>Many contra dance callers use The Caller’s Box, a phenomenal dance choreography database from Chris Page and Michael Dyck. For those of us who primarily call gender free dances, though, using it requires mental translation from gendered role terms to gender neutral ones. I’ve created a browser plugin, Caller’s Box Configurator, to fix this.</p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/ContraDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ContraDance</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/TradFolk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TradFolk</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/DanceCalling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DanceCalling</span></a></p><p><a href="https://chromamine.com/2025/03/callers-box-configurator/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">chromamine.com/2025/03/callers</span><span class="invisible">-box-configurator/</span></a></p>
Sam Whited<p>"Flow" by Countercurrent is out! I went to the pre-release listening thing for this a few days ago and was excited to hear that the band included a couple of labor songs on the release! "I Am The Fox" and "Six Workers" are great and I'm trying very hard not to let myself splurge on this album (I did have a job interview a few days ago… that's close enough to actually having a job again, right?!)! Give it a listen if you're so inclined:</p><p><a href="https://countercurrentmusic.bandcamp.com/album/flow" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">countercurrentmusic.bandcamp.c</span><span class="invisible">om/album/flow</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/Contra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Contra</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/Music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Music</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/ContraDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ContraDance</span></a></p>

Sam Whited<p>Early recommendation for next Bandcamp Friday: this whole album is great, but "Tarbolton Lodge" by Elixir might be one of the best instrumental tracks ever written. I recommend listening in a quiet room with some really good headphones; there's a lot to catch in there:</p><p><a href="https://elixirband.bandcamp.com/track/tarbolton-lodge" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">elixirband.bandcamp.com/track/</span><span class="invisible">tarbolton-lodge</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/BandcampFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BandcampFriday</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/ContraDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ContraDance</span></a></p>
Sam Whited<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://alaskan.social/@ScoterD" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>ScoterD</span></a></span> I don't know why, but I've never even thought to search for contra people on here! I mostly do blues and lindy hop, but contra was my first dance and has a special place in my heart. We're lucky enough to have two weekly dances in Atlanta where I am, the original live-band one is very far from me though so it's a bit hard to get too and I go irregularly. The other one is DJed and I've never been to it, but it's a bit closer so I need to try it one of these days.</p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/ContraDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ContraDance</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/Atlanta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Atlanta</span></a></p>
Sam Whited<p>I recently got hotcues/looping working in my <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://floss.social/@mixxx" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>mixxx</span></a></span> plugin for the KeyLab Mk1, so I'm learning how to use them. The DJs I know do blues or Lindy with no live mixing though. There's a DJed contra dance in town, and they'd have to be able to loop until the caller decides the dance is over I assume? Is this something contra DJs actually do, or are DJed dances normally just exact lengths to pre-recorded songs? I've only ever been to live contras before. Do I know anyone who does this?</p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/ContraDance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ContraDance</span></a></p>

Harris Lapiroff<p>It occurred to me recently that I don’t think there are any contra dances that feature a set and link figure that's popular in Scottish Country Dance.
