Sam WhitedI just applied for a scholarship to the John C. Campbell Folk School for their traditional dance callers week. Not something I had on my bingo card for this year, but apparently I was recommended for it by someone in the local contra scene and invited to apply, so why not? Harris LapiroffMany contra dance callers use The Caller’s Box, a phenomenal dance choreography database from Chris Page and Michael Dyck. For those of us who primarily call gender free dances, though, using it requires mental translation from gendered role terms to gender neutral ones. Sam Whited"Flow" by Countercurrent is out! I went to the pre-release listening thing for this a few days ago and was excited to hear that the band included a couple of labor songs on the release! "I Am The Fox" and "Six Workers" are great and I'm trying very hard not to let myself splurge on this album (I did have a job interview a few days ago… that's close enough to actually having a job again, right?!)! I mostly do blues and lindy hop, but contra was my first dance and has a special place in my heart. We're lucky enough to have two weekly dances in Atlanta where I am, the original live-band one is very far from me though so it's a bit hard to get too and I go irregularly. Sam WhitedI recently got hotcues/looping working in my <a href="https://floss.social/@mixxx" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@mixxx</a> plugin for the KeyLab Mk1, so I'm learning how to use them. The DJs I know do blues or Lindy with no live mixing though. There's a DJed contra dance in town, and they'd have to be able to loop until the caller decides the dance is over I assume? Is this something contra DJs actually do, or are DJed dances normally just exact lengths to pre-recorded songs? I've only ever been to live contras before.
