Call #Weird, call me SuperNerd, call me #nerd but I really enjoy doing this. Maybe it’s the #Learning, maybe it’s the #Fun, or maybe I’m a little more #Nerdy than I thought, but building out my #Homelab starting with #PiHole and working from there has been a wonderful experience. The documentation process has also been enjoyable; maybe it’s because it shows my work and what I’ve done as an #accomplishment

@fesshole Pro-tip, install a local pi-hole on mobile devices (which leave your local network, which could have it's network wide pi-hole) so that not only browsers are protected, but the whole device. It also makes websites not detect you have an adblocker so you can browse freely.

What's funny is that again, even with our home PiHole (which has somewhat lax blocking for seamless internet browsing to any normie connected) got the malicious domain (mailchimp-sso .com) blocked

This is the second time my pihole blocked a phishing domain

It is amazing to see how good software does the job and stays out of your way. Example of this is #PiHole that is for years now running on tiny #RPi 3A+ without any problems 🙌 and serving all clients in my network. ❤️

@michaelrowe01 observed quite a number of rabbit holes for proposed #PiHole lists…

Example:
avoidthehack.com/best-pihole-b

Will see how my journey progresses before meandering down too many…
…and will be seeking to add whitelists for sites that offer splendidly meaningful services!

@michaelrowe01 after far too much procrastination - finally deployed Pi-Hole onto local NAS. You have voiced endorsement on many a GatW.B episode!

Tested = doing the desired task!
Added extra blocklists (github.com/jacklul/pihole-upda)

Also trained allowed-list with regex for #quad9 ;) = thankful for their DNS service

Might you share your ☯️ lists?

Yet to setup backup local #PiHole instance on separate low-power hungry device (contemplating bringing back online #NSLU2 for this purpose)

People really need to set up a dns black hole, use #pihole #pfsense with #pfblockerng use something.

Essentially a mini PC sits between my devices and the internet and filters it.

I am subscribed a bunch of lists that allow my device to block malware, adware, ads and other things I don't want my devices to connect to.

You can't trust most devices so you need to control your connection.

Also, use #Grapheneos
