I feel very lucky and honoured to have seen a kermode bear/spirit bear in the 90s when I was travelling up the Central Coast of BC (between the northern tip of Vancouver Island and the Alaska Panhandle). Black bears are very common but there are only 50 to a few hundred of these bears. They are only found on a few of the Islands and mainland coastline. They are sacred in Indigenous teachings.

Early in the morning, at the edge of a forest of brown and purple, greens and gold, a smiling bear pads quietly across the grass. Caught in a sunbeam, a young girl in a flowered yellow dress is sleeping upon his back, her arms folded under her head. Plants, like ferns and budding flowers, line each side of the glade.
