Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>"The Three Stones in the Giant Mountains," Carl Gustav Carus, 1826.</p><p>Carus (1789-1869) was many things...a doctor, naturalist, psychologist, author, physiologist...but it's his career as a painter I'll be touching on. He was a student of the great Romantic Caspar David Friedrich, whose influence can be seen here.</p><p>This is (or was) a real scene in the Giant Mountains (Reisengeberge) on the Polish/Czech border. Carus traveled there in 1820, probably on the recommendation of Friedrich, who took several walking tours there. Friedrich was famous for his paintings of ruined towers and cathedrals; Carus here uses the three rocks as his own Gothic towers, and it's an impressive sight. He gives the scene immense atmosphere while also depicting the scene with scientific clarity. These days, more folks are making a case for the Romantics as forerunners of the Enlightenment, and I can see that here.</p><p>Makes me want to climb a mountain...</p><p>From the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Art</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/CarlGustavCarus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CarlGustavCarus</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Romanticism</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Landscape</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Mountains" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mountains</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Drama" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Drama</span></a></p>

the roamer<p>I was 22 when I read the once famous but now long forgotten novel The Titan (1803) by Jean Paul (1763 -1825), Germany's belated echo of England's Laurence Sterne.</p><p>The chapters in The Titan aren't called "chapters" like in any other book. Instead each is a "Jobelperiode", "Jubilation period" or perhaps "Joohbilation Period". So having finished say chapter 22, the reader turns the page and enters "The Twentythird Joohbilation Period".</p><p>The concept was liberating. Style can subvert. Convention has no claim on any of us.</p><p>When I encountered the Jobelperiode I knew there was a role for me as a writer. Not a novelist or poet, but a science writer with poetic urgency. Forty years later, I agree with my younger self. I write mostly for my students. Long notes of precise analytical exposition, with the occasional intervention of the unexpected poetic liberty, the confident breach of protocol. Jean Paul's Jobelperiode has stayed with me.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/JeanPaul" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JeanPaul</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/style" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>style</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Romanticism</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Jobelperiode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jobelperiode</span></a></p>

DreamscapesI could have spent day in the City of Rocks in New Mexico. I fell in love with all the shapes and sizes of these weird rocks in the middle of the high desert. I combined this photograph with a monoprint and a textured painting of New Mexico's emblem, the sun. It turned out pretty ethereal. I will truly always remember this place as the land of enchantment.<br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/natureart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#natureart</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/romanticism?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#romanticism</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/newmexico?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#newmexico</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/landscape?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#landscape</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/mixedmedia?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#mixedmedia</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/artwork?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#artwork</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/artforsale?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#artforsale</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/artfortheoffice?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#artfortheoffice</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/homedecor?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#homedecor</a>

Assoc for Scottish Literature<p>“Like Burns, Byron knew how earthy values crossed social strata. But by Byron’s time, polite society was even more thoroughly committed to grinding down public festivities in fairs, sports and open air gatherings. Byron was a shock for polite, well-educated readers. He horrified his public.”</p><p>—Prof Alan Riach on Burns, Byron, &amp; overlapping traditions</p><p>3/4</p><p><a href="https://www.thenational.scot/news/15987226.aristocratic-lord-byron-shares-ploughman-burns/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">thenational.scot/news/15987226</span><span class="invisible">.aristocratic-lord-byron-shares-ploughman-burns/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Scottish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scottish</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/poetry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>poetry</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Byron" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Byron</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/LordByron" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LordByron</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/romantic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>romantic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>romanticism</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/18thcentury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>18thcentury</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/19thcentury" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>19thcentury</span></a></p>

Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>"Gate in the Rocks," Karl Freidrich Schinkel, 1818.</p><p>Schinkle (1781-1841) was a painter, of course, but also an architect, urban planner, and a designer of furniture and theatrical sets. One of his set designs was the oft-reproduced starry set for Mozart's "The Magic Flute" which you've probably seen somewhere. He also helped chape Berlin from being a small provincial city to a major capitol.</p><p>As an architect, he mostly worked in a Neoclassical style until turning to Neo-Gothic in his later life; artistically, he was solidly a Romantic. This dramatic canvas seems to have been influenced by a trip to Friulia, a region of Italy by the German border. If it looks anything like this, I want to go.</p><p>From the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Art</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/GermanArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GermanArt</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Romanticism</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/KarlFriedrichSchindel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KarlFriedrichSchindel</span></a></p>
