I recently attended a workshop by Permaculture Institute of North America about starting nurseries. Among all the facilitators, these books were most recommended. A bit hard to find used though. I guess people keep them.

Save the #DartingtonForestGarden
This page is dedicated to our fight against our landlord’s (#DartingtonHallTrust) decision to evict us from our 31-year-old #ForestGarden in #Dartington, #DevonUK. Here you’ll find latest updates and press releases, and also your tributes to the forest garden and what it means to you, and why it should be preserved.
Update Sun 16 March 2025
"Morning to all our wonderful supporters!
"The petition to save our forest garden has gathered over 7,500 signatures in two days which is AMAZING.
"I think our landlords DHT may have been surprised and shocked both by the level of support and by the passion shown, so thank you all again.
"Before we went public, we did in fact write to CEO Robert Fedder at DHT a week ago, explaining why the forest garden was such an important resource, and asking them to retract their notice to quit. We also told him that there would be considerable public support and inevitable bad PR for them. Clearly DHT didn’t want a sensible dialogue at that time ….
"Our focus now is persuading DHT to sell the forest garden site to us. We know there are supporters out there itching to get crowdfunding so anyone with good experience of this please get in touch – we may need you!
"We heard a report that someone shouted abuse at Dartington staff yesterday. Please don’t. DHT front line staff are not responsible for DHT decisions.
"We are so touched by all the messages of support, this really means a lot so thanks again everyone."

One of the oldest and most important forest gardens in Europe, 31-year old project stewarded by pioneer Martin Crawford, is threatened to end this year by a change in the leadership of the trust they've leased the land with. This place is invaluable and telling them to end the lease is ecological vandalism https://substack.com/home/post/p-159120584 #ForestGarden #DartingtonHallTrust #MartinCrawford
We visited Dartington a few years ago just to see this forest garden. It was an inspiring day and great to see how the integration of food/non-food plants. There’s no substitute for visiting a forest garden if you want to start creating your own and the one at Dartington is an exemplar. #forestgarden #permaculture #growing https://www.agroforestry.co.uk/save-dartington-forest-garden/
This is ecological and cultural vandalism.
The UK's preeminent 31 year old #ForestGarden is threatened with destruction by the landlords Dartington Hall Trust.

Please sign this petition to Dartington Hall Trust to ensure their counterproductive and frankly insane decision to end Martin Crawford's lease on the best example of a #Permaculture #Agroforestry #FoodForest #ForestGarden in the temperate world!
Martin Crawford's work is so pioneering and important and MUST be allowed to continue. https://chng.it/cn2cCGFhbs

Bridgehouse Gardens community group in South London has been on an incredible journey.
Together, they have transformed a disused, vacant tarmac site into a thriving forest garden and built by hand a new community learning space, The Winslade Barn. Along the way, participants have learnt amazing practical skills, built community and created space for wildlife.

5 years ago the PTO at my kid's school got a grant to start a forest garden, My wonderful spouse has been deeply involved since the start and I've helped where I can. The organization did a video about it and well, I think it's rad.
After last year's disastrous attempt at stratification of my walnuts, I'm trying again with both walnuts and chestnuts.
Apparently the walnuts shouldn't be kept for months in a damp bag in the fridge or they end up as fungi food. It appears that I should only stratify them for a week (some recommend drilling a hole in the top of the nut). Recommendations much appreciated.
According to online stuff, chestnuts need stratifying for far longer, so I'll probably bung them in pots outside over the winter and see how it goes. Also, these appear to be rather fragile, having been de-nutted. Again, if there are any experts out there, I'd appreciate your advice (I'm at ~700m in the Massif Central).

[not my usual ‘sort of thing’ to post - as broad as that is - but I found this fascinating; it reminds me, in a sense, of the Incas incrementally selecting corn stock that can handle higher and higher altitudes, in ‘research stations’, although those were a domesticated crop]

So, my neighbor and I share a property line which contains a wooded area full of blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, sweet pea and other plants (as well as trees). We've been talking about taking walks together to see what's out there, figure out what's invasive, and growing more for the local wildlife (and maybe ourselves -- we've had some great blackberry harvests in the past). We both garden for pollinators in our yards, so it would be great to collaborate (and maybe include some of the other neighbors). I just bought a couple of books that might prove very useful with this endeavor!
Food Forests in Permaculture: An In-Depth Guide
Discover how to create a food forest—an abundant, sustainable ecosystem mimicking natural forests. Learn about planning, layers, and benefits.
July 26, 2024
"The concept of food forests is deeply rooted in history, with ancient practices found in various cultures around the world. Traditional forest gardens have been practiced for centuries in regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central America. These systems were developed by indigenous peoples who recognized the benefits of integrating trees, shrubs, and other plants to create sustainable food production systems.
"One of the earliest examples of a food forest is found in the ancient Mayan civilization, where forest gardens were an integral part of their agricultural system. These gardens included a variety of fruit trees, medicinal plants, and other useful species arranged in a way that mimicked the natural forest structure.
"In modern times, the principles of food forests were popularized by permaculture pioneers like Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the late 20th century. They advocated for the use of natural systems and processes to create sustainable agricultural practices. Today, food forests are recognized as a vital component of permaculture and are being implemented worldwide to promote food security, biodiversity, and ecological health."

Planting a community #FoodForest
University of Minnesota Cooperative Extension, 2021
"A food forest, also called a #ForestGarden, contains a variety of food plants with the goal of replicating the #ecosystems and growing patterns found in nature. Food forests are food production systems that use perennial plants combined with annuals in a multi-story cropping design.
"Communally established and managed food forests are a sustainable way to address the increased need for urban food security, resilient communities and productive public land. They can help people learn about and care for plants that produce edible fruits, nuts and vegetables."
