“For nearly a thousand years, communities on the Indian subcontinent had coexisted in a cultural melting where religious identity was less salient than ethnic or linguistic identity. “A hybrid Indo-Islamic civilization emerged,” according to the historian of India William Dalrymple. “In the nineteenth century, India was still a place where traditions, languages, and cultures cut across religious groupings, and where people did not define themselves primarily through their religious faith.” Much as communities had negotiated means of coexistence in pre-Mandate Palestine only to see them unravel during British rule, the subcontinent’s communal arrangements corroded when the full weight of Britain’s colonial state bore down on them. The Raj’s divide and rule policies produced a chemical-like reaction, shattering long-standing traditions of coexistence and interacting with local personalities who had their own ambitions, passions, and allegiances. It was another liberal experiment in empire gone horribly wrong, and on a scale so epic that once history’s chain of contingent events combusted, no one could contain it.”

The Republican turn against democracy begins with racism

Support for authoritarian ideas in America is closely tied to the country’s long-running racial conflicts.

A September 2020 paper by Vanderbilt professor Larry Bartels, shows a statistical analysis of a survey of Republican voters -- analyzing the link between respondents’ score on a measure of “#ethnic #antagonism
and their support for four anti-democratic statements
(e.g., “the traditional American way of life is disappearing so fast that we may have to use force to save it”).

Their data show a clear finding:
💥The higher a voter scores on the ethnic antagonism scale,
the more likely they are to support anti-democratic ideas.

This held true even when Bartels used regression analyses to compare racial attitudes to other predictors, like support for Trump.

“The strongest predictor by far of these antidemocratic attitudes is ethnic antagonism,” he writes.

For students of American history, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

The 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act cemented Democrats as the party of racial equality,
causing racially resentful Democrats in the South and elsewhere to defect to the Republican Party.

⚠️This sorting process, which took place over the next few decades, is the key reason America is so polarized.

It also explains why Republicans are increasingly willing to endorse anti-democratic political tactics and ideas.

In the past, restrictions on the franchise served to protect white political power in a changing country

🔥Today, as demographic change threatens to further undermine the central place of white Americans, many are becoming comfortable with an updated version of the Jim Crow South’s #authoritarian #tradition.

Donald Trump has long made clear that he admires Russian strongman Vladimir #Putin,

including calling his invasion of Ukraine ♦️“genius” and “savvy.”

Remarks he made Monday to the National Guard Association in Detroit demonstrate just how worried he is that Ukrainian efforts to resist Putin’s aggression might be successful.

Musing on Russia’s war against Ukraine,
Trump expressed dismay that Russia

— which escalated a war it initially started a decade ago by launching an unprovoked full-scale assault in February 2022

— has now itself been invaded by Ukrainian forces.

Trump’s pro-dictator enthusiasms are likely to be damaging far beyond Europe.

For example, Trump
— who has again often praised China’s President #Xi
— has hedged on whether he would defend #Taiwan,
arguing (as with NATO) that Taiwan should pay the US for military support.

Along the same lines,
Trump in his first term abandoned Obama-era anti-corruption and pro-democracy efforts in #Guatemala.

In 2023, after Guatemalans rallied against their corrupt, evangelical right-wing Christian oligarchy
and elected reform president Bernardo Arévalo,

Biden launched a major effort to back Arévalo and prevent a coup.

Continued US support is critical, according to journalist Jody García.

Given Trump’s past record and his anti-democracy bent,
it seems likely that if he wins, Guatemalan democracy will lose.

Trump’s disdain for democracy and for diplomacy would likely also worsen the already nightmarish situation in #Gaza.

Since the horrific Hamas attack on Israel on 10/7, Biden has supplied billions in weapons to Israel, while urging the far right government of Benjamin Netanyahu to take care to avoid civilian casualties. Israel has instead killed tens of thousands of civilians.

This is not a successful humanitarian policy, to put it mildly.

Trump’s recommendation, though, is to call for even harsher measures.

During his debate with Biden in June, Trump called Biden a “bad Palestinian” and said that Biden should
♦️ “let Israel finish the job.”

Given the terrifying level of devastation Israel has already inflicted, “finish the job” in this context appears to be an outright call for destruction.

(In related news, Jared Kushner said during a recent interview that “Gaza’s waterfront property could be very valuable.”)

Trump likes strongman solutions, up to and including #mass #violence and #ethnic #cleansing.

Rather than leading to any sort of peace, this push for more extreme violence will only enflame the region,
potentially precipitating a dreaded Israel/Hezbollah #war which could involve #Iran.

Such a widening of the conflict was only narrowly avoided this week.

Lawrence W. Britt: 14 Characteristics of #Fascism

"#Historian #LawrenceBritt studied the fascist regimes of #Hitler (Germany), #Mussolini (Italy), #Franco (Spain), #Suharto (Indonesia), and #Pinochet (Chile) and found they had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism.

1. Powerful and Continuing #Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of #patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. #Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of #HumanRights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners.

3. Identification of #Enemies / #Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: #racial, #ethnic or #religious #minorities; #liberals; #communists; #socialists, #terrorists

4. Supremacy of the #Military
Even when there are widespread #domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant #Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional #gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to #abortion is high, as is #homophobia and anti-#gay legislation.

6. Controlled #MassMedia
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Government #censorship and #secrecy especially in war time, are very common.

7. Obsession with #NationalSecurity
Fear of hostile foreign powers is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. #Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.

9. Protection of #Corporate Power
The #industrial and business #aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Suppression of #Labor Power
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor #unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for #Intellectuals and the #Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to #HigherEducation and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other #academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

12. Obsession with #Crime and #Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the #police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego #CivilLiberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant #Cronyism and #Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. #FraudulentElections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by #SmearCampaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control #voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

This post is a summary of Fascism, Anyone? by Lawrence W. Britt published in 2003 by Free Inquiry magazine."
