And then there's the sledding. The real sled dog sport. With snow and runners under your feet. The quiet, silent sport - at least when the dogs are running (it can get deafeningly loud at the start). Just the breathing of the dogs and the sounds the sled makes as it is pulled through the snow. It's impressive and wonderful. The photo was taken in February 2021. In Brandenburg. Just round the corner from where I live. We had a lot of snow so that a friend came from near Hamburg with her huskies to go sledging with us. That was really unique. A year earlier, we had travelled to Swedish Lapland together, also to go sledding. In the photo you can see my two dogs, Mette and Bounty, in the lead (at the front) and one of my friend's dogs, Yukon, in the wheel.

It's five above zero in Minneapolis Thursday morning, heading for a high of 16℉.

NWS: Warming trend will produce highs in the 30s this weekend and the 40s early next week.

There's an excellent piece with beautiful photography in the local paper this morning about a well-known Duluth outdoorswoman who's running the Iditarod with her “16 best friends.”

Second was Bib #5, Matthew Schmidt from Sawtooth Racing, Grand Marais, MN. We enjoyed some hot drinks on the shore for a while, but the next teams were apparently far behind, so we took our restless huskies back around the bay in front of our cabin to follow a moose trail.

That's our cabin with the green roof and gray-green siding on the right of the third photo.

We caught one more team passing in view between a couple of islands on the way back, but we couldn't read the bib # from this distance.

Gunflint Mail Run is on today! We shuffled out with our huskies and our Hok skis on Poplar Lake to watch the first teams return on the first leg of the race from a safe distance on the shore of an island near the race track.

Here is Bib #8, Rita Wehseler of Stoney Creek Sled Dogs from Tofte, MN, first back on Poplar Lake.*

* We presume they're first! We had been out for a while and hadn't seen anyone else before. This race doesn't have trackers and isn't posting live to their website. gunflintmailrun.com

The Red Lantern is a first-person narrative-driven game about dog-sledding, with some roguelite & survival elements.

It's the sixth game in this month's Humble Choice bundle, and it's an interesting title, that I wouldn't have picked to play.

Making a snow-change, you open the game by meeting a series of dogs, needing to select 4 of them to build a dog-sledding team in Alaska.

Once you've picked your doggos, you reach your destination, and have to make a several-day sled trip to a remote cabin through a procedurally generated environment. The game is the story of that trip.

If you fail, you wake up again in your van, "from a nightmare", and start the sled-trip over, with more resources based on your previous experiences, with your ultimate goal to reach the cabin that's marked by the red lantern hanging outside.

If you're a dog person, this game might definitely be up your alley.
