This cute little guy is from the original Super Mario Bros. His name is Goomba in English and Kuribō in Japanese.

The game takes place in a mushroom kingdom, so he was modeled after Shiitakes. But one developer thought he resembled a chestnut, and called him Kuribō. This means “chestnut boy” in Japanese.

There’s more to the story, but that’s the gist of his name duality.

Finished Super Mario Bros Wonder the other day. It's definitely an evolution of New Super Mario Bros which draws extensively on Super Mario Bros 3, with a good helping of Super Mario Bros 2. Easy to beat, but super-hard to clear. Wonder Flowers are a cool idea that makes everything even more druggy, but the real star of the show is the Elephant Fruit, which turns you into an elephant.

IRL issues and the semi-closure of #RHDN kinda threw off my plans to have the final anniversary update (and hopefully final update, period) of #SuperMarioBros DX released before the end of the year. I haven't been able to finish all of the extras or documentation and package it all up, but the main patch has been ready for some time. You can find that here!:

Others are remaking Princess Toadstool from Super #Mario Bros. in their own #PixelArt style, so I decided to take a crack at it myself. Everyone seems to be keeping the colors, so I did, too. Not having any ideas for a design change, I decided to see what it would take to make her design more closely match her official art, but I wanted to keep that red wave detail on her skirt. This has been tested on a real CRT with the slight horizontal stretching the NES did and it still looks good that way, so this is probably my final version.

A comparison of Princess Toadstool (Peach) sprites. On the left, the original in brick red, amber, and white, giving what looks like her giving a finger gun with her mouth open and jaw thrust forward. She looks stumpy with a really big head, her yellow crown doesn't sit right, and her red hair is pretty much shapeless. Her ball gown is white with a red wavy band on the bottom and sits like a bell on the ground. The upper half is basically a halter top. She has one beady black eye showing. She's at about a 7/8 angle. On the right, my take, using the same colors. Her head is smaller and more proportional, clearly heart-shaped like her official art, with big eyes with visible whites, looking to the side toward where Mario would be. Her crown has a bit more depth and has some give and take with her hair, with gems rendered in white. Her trademark pink lips are rendered as a red pixel. Her hair now incorporates her trademark upward flips near her temples and lower down in the body of the length. Her dress is still white, but now has visible puffed shoulders and a bust defined by some black pixels as outlines. The bell of her gown still bears that red wave, but it now more clearly wraps around and the bell's bottom has visible ruffling. She stands at a 3/4 angle with her hands clasped near her heart. Additionally, her dress is still able to save a tile with flipping, as the bell has been given upward volume to free up her hair.

Apparently, Judy's birthday was Mario Day! So, this weekend I decided to get her a special, Mario themed present - a Princess Peach dress. She went gaga over it and, to my surprise, was wearing it the very next day!

So glad she loved her present.

...Maybe I should get her the Peach Crown too. Hmm.
