The National Weather Service has upgraded a fire weather watch in counties west of Houston to a red flag warning, alerting that conditions are favorable for wildfires Wednesday afternoon.
Counties west of Houston will be under a fire weather watch Wednesday afternoon as strong wind gusts are expected to pick up across the area, according to the National Weather Service.

"Tornadoes likely amid storm outbreak
"The Storm Prediction Center said fast-moving storms could spawn twisters and hail as large as baseballs Friday, but the greatest threat would come from straight-line winds near or exceeding hurricane force, with gusts of 100 mph (160 kph) possible.
"A #TornadoWatch was issued until 11 p.m. for central and eastern #Missouri, including St. Louis, as well as parts of #Illinois and #Arkansas.
"The National Weather Service said it observed an evening tornado in the south-central Missouri city of #Grovespring.
"Other areas at risk included parts of #Iowa, #Kentucky, #Tennessee and #Mississippi.
"About 47 million people faced an enhanced to moderate severe storm threat from Madison, #Wisconsin, to Birmingham, #Alabama.
"Forecasters grew increasingly worried that intense thunderstorms farther south will likely bring an even greater tornado threat Saturday.
"The Storm Prediction Center said parts of #Mississippi including Jackson and Hattiesburg and areas of #Alabama including Birmingham and Tuscaloosa will be at a high risk. Severe storms and tornadoes are also possible across eastern #Louisiana, western #Georgia, central #Tennessee and the western #Florida Panhandle.
"'We have a lot of confidence that we most likely will have a tornado outbreak tomorrow,' Storm Prediction Center meteorologist Evan Bentley said in an online briefing."

"A huge percent– ultimately all of us--in this country are impacted by the destruction of a functional federal government and the attack on a whole lot of stuff we love and need, from reliable weather reports to public health to science research to sane international relations."

"Their work informs farmers when to plant and harvest. Their work determines when to sound tornado alarms and when to evacuate from the path of a hurricane. That all adds up to more than 3 billion weather forecasts a year. Now, as the tornado season starts and the hurricane season near, none of that seems to matter to the ideologues in charge. But it certainly should."

"The National Weather Service is a government success story. … For about $4 a year, we get the best scientists in the world watching a staggering number of weather events each year. Tens of thousands of thunderstorms, 5,000 floods, 1,300 tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts and an increasing number of wildfires. Their work makes it safe to fly."

The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a red flag warning across Southeast Texas, alerting that conditions are favorable for wildfires.
"'It may not be noticeable to the public right away, but it will be down the road,' he says. 'We may not notice degradation in service right away, but down the road we will start to see issues.'
"Behringer notes that some other NWS offices that were already understaffed have relied on help from Monterey meteorologists during major weather events, but with less bandwidth everywhere, that kind of boost will be less likely.”
…
"Of the National Weather Service, Behringer says, "Even with the rumors, I thought it wouldn’t happen to us. We usually have pretty good bipartisan support. We are deemed essential, even in a shutdown."
"[NOAA] has also canceled a lease for a building housing the National Centers for Environmental Prediction in Maryland, which produces information for the #NationalWeatherService, Air Force, Navy, and Federal Aviation Administration.
#Project2025, the right-wing manifesto for the second Trump administration, said #NOAA “should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories.” "

Some NWS offices are already suspending their twice-daily weather balloon / radiosonde launches because they won't have the personnel. What difference does that make? If we don't get data from the various levels of the atmosphere, then the numerical weather prediction models won't have as much information, which means the computer guidance will be less accurate, which will then lead to less accurate human forecasts. These incompetent, unqualified people who are firing hard-working scientists indiscriminately don't have the first clue what these cuts will do. I used to launch these radiosondes myself in college while I worked for the NWS. STOP THIS NONSENSE!
It's the equivalent of trying to achieve weight loss by amputating a limb. The incompetence is truly staggering, and I feel awful for all the meteorologists and climatologists affected directly... then for ordinary citizens down the road who lose their property or their lives because adequate severe weather coverage can't be given for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, blizzards... you name it.

I've been a meteorologist for over 30 years, I worked for the National Weather Service my 4 undergraduate years, and I loved it.
There are NO good reasons for firing hardworking, already understaffed NWS/NOAA personnel, and it WILL cost lives!
The potential "savings" are so small compared to the benefit we get from the NWS saving lives and property daily.
STOP this madness, trump and musk! You have no idea how far-reaching the ramifications of this are.
Overnight temperatures in Houston are forecasted to be in the low 30s on Wednesday and Thursday, while outlying areas could see temps dip into the mid-20s as much of Texas prepares for what could be the last major cold front of the winter season.
