Italy's new high-speed rail looks to lift the south.

Italy's high-speed railway is finally pressing into the heart of the underdeveloped south in the hope that the new network will help reverse years of depopulation and lift the lacklustre economy.

The 145km line will connect the cities of Naples on the Mediterranean coast to Bari on the shores of the Adriatic in just two hours, against four at present.

Naples residents camp outdoors after an overnight earthquake.

Many people in and around the Italian city of Naples have spent the night on the streets and in their cars after an earthquake shook buildings and brought rubble crashing down.

Italian seismologists said the 4.4 magnitude tremor struck at 01:25 local time on Thursday at a shallow depth of three kilometres. The US Geological Survey measured it as a 4.2 tremor 10km deep.

In 2016 we booked a reasonably late deal cruise on the fairly new ship Royal Princess for a week in the Mediterranean. Mediterranean cruises are port-intensive ones so we had a stop on the very first day at Naples. We opted to take a tour that visited a cameo workshop then took us on a guided walk around Herculaneum. Herculaneum, like Pompeii, was buried under volcanic ash in 79 CE when Vesuvius erupted.

We're in the ruins of an ancient Roman city looking along a narrow street between buildings. The walls either side aren't fully intact with parts barely above head height and they're made of pale, sandy-coloured bricks, mostly arranged as expected but some at angles to form diamond or diagonal patterns. The street consists of narrow strips of flat, raised pavement either side of a recessed surface with a slight curve on it up towards the centre, made of larger blocks of cobblestones. It's about the width of a cart pulled by a single horse. There are some tourists gathered towards the end of the street and one woman is walking this way on the opposite pavement to us. A raised bank at the end of the street is topped by tall thin trees against the patchy sky and more trees at ground level can be seen over the top of the corner of the wall to the left of us. A sign on the wall reads "Insula VI."

A remarkable finding has emerged in #Italy, where the remains of a luxurious #Roman villa have arisen from the waters of #LakeFusaro, which is near #Naples. This phenomenon has been attributed to #bradyseism, which is a geological process brought about by the movements of #magma or hydrothermal fluids beneath the Earth’s surface.
