@F2erron

The popular narrative that #scientists will come up with conclusions that fit the funders needs does not happen in my experience.

Oil companies hired environmental scientists to look into global warming and they certainly did not get the answer they wanted.

I was hired on a project funded by Eli Lilly many years ago and they did not get the answer they were hoping for. They did appreciate the honesty and integrity, plus in depth discussions about why it didn't pan out as they thought. We did get further funding to see if it would be possible to get closer to their desired scenario, with the caveat that there were no guarantees. Unfortunately for them it still had issues and they eventually shelved it.

Have had many other dealings with commercial projects over many years and they have always appreciated honesty. Did convince one company that they would be wasting their money.

Certain that most people working in #science would do the same.

@Tarnport Not much happening in Norway this morning. Main top story & headline on national main news NRK is telling us you @Tarnport, will get more US company in France. Liked that doorshot

EDIT: As a matter of fact, 242 American researchers have applied for jobs at the University of Aix-Marseille. “This is a big discussion throughout Europe,” says the rector of the University of Oslo.

There's broad consensus among #climate #scientists that the overwhelming priority is to cut #greenhousegas #emissions, the chief cause of #globalwarming.
But many scientists also believe that part of the solution will have to involve capturing some of the gases that have already been released. What makes #SeaCure interesting is that it is testing whether it might be more efficient to pull planet-warming #carbon from the sea, since it is present in greater concentrations.

A large wave in the Atlantic breaks. The water is a deep blue green colour. There is a surfer and people on jetskis.
www.bbc.comCould taking carbon out of the sea cool down the planet?A pilot project will test whether it is a useful way of fighting climate change.

Historical reversals.

Americans, it’s time to move to Europe

A slightly superficial article iun many ways, but having lived in the US and now living in Europe (Scotland) with a US partner (who would not go back) a lot of it is good stuff. And that is before you have to consider the current fascist danger or even trivial things such as gun crime.

@markmccaughrean Well, this prize showed a collection of all these #TESCREAL fascist bros ("Brin and Zuckerberg as well as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman"). In this case, is it kowtowing or is it already collaboration?

Does anybody know how the scientific world itself categorises this prize? What significance does it have for serious scientists beyond that Hollywoodesque fuss? @academicchatter

@grrlscientist it worked for me- maybe that bug is fixed? I'm glad i hadn't used up the 4 free articles per month that Forbes allows- not only did i appreciate your article but I'm also happy i could (hopefully) have a beneficial impact on your tally. (I accessed it in both the mastodon app and the Firefox app, so that would be cool if it counted as 2, but probably not, huh?)
#yayScience! #scientists rock on!

“Scientists forced to perform humiliating new job amid Trump cuts.”

I wish that this article was from the Onion, but it’s actually news from the Daily Mail, that’s unfortunately the awful truth about the possible fate of scientists who were fired by the Trump admin by way of Musk’s DOGE.

It’s Trump who should be made to perform humiliating jobs in prison, for the rest of his life.

Trump seeks to end #climate #research at premier U.S. climate agency
The document indicates the White House is ready to ask Congress to eliminate NOAA’s climate research centers and cut hundreds of federal and academic climate #scientists who track and study human-driven global warming. If approved by Congress, the plan would represent a huge blow to efforts to understand #climatechange, says Craig McLean, OAR’s longtime director who retired in 2022. #NASA also targeted

Do you remember the 2019 study about how we can feed the world’s growing population without causing catastrophic climate breakdown?
