“Sierra de Samaná hills”

The Cordillera Septentrional is a mountain range that runs parallel to the north coast of the Dominican Republic, with extensions to the northwest as Tortuga island in Haiti, and to the southeast through lowlands to where it rises as the Sierra de Samaná on the Samaná Peninsula.

The Sierra de Samaná stretches along the Samaná peninsula, over a length of 60 kilometers. The peninsula's highest points are: La Meseta at 650 meters, Las Cañitas at 546 meters and Pan de Azúcar at 493 meters.

This mountain range contains deposits of marble and lignite, but only the marble has been mined.

A slow and short cruise overnight from Buenos Aires in 2016 brought us along the Río de la Plata to Uruguay's capital, Montevideo. Here, we began an organised excursion with a stop at Plaza Independencia, the main square. The sculpture in the centre is that of José Gervasio Artigas, a national hero considered to be the father of the nation of Uruguay. His remains are interred below the sculpture in a guarded mausoleum.

It's a bright, sunny day with a mid-morning feel to it. The sky is blue with thin streamers and translucent patches of white cloud in it. We're standing on one corner of a public square in a city looking diagonally across at the centre where there is a sculpture. Around the square are buildings of various styles with a large, red-brick hotel block on the right being the tallest. Other buildings look more modern with glass and light panelling, and one building has a more colonial feel to it with a rounded tower on its corner and a tapered dome atop with a spire. The public square is paved in a pattern of light and dark stone slabs and there aren't very many people around with most of those gathered to the right in what look like two small tourist groups. The sculpture in the centre is a large marble box plinth on top of which there is a man mounted on a horse. The horse has its front right leg raised slightly as if about to start walking or to paw at the ground.
