Rihanna Is Giving Bikes And Scholarships To Help Malawian Girls

“I’m so happy about the Clara Lionel Foundation’s new partnership with ofo because it will help so many young people around the world receive a quality education, and also help the young girls of Malawi get to school safely, cutting down those very long walks they make to and from school all alone,” Rihanna said in a statement.

#Malawi: Consumption of whole #maize flour could boost #foodsecurity. Dehulling causes losses of 10% for #protein, 60% for #zinc & 50% for iron. Local preferences are for refined #flour due to convenience & cultural norms, despite the #nutrition benefits of whole grain flour: doi.org/10.1007/s44187-025-003

SpringerLinkWhole maize flour could enhance food and nutrition security in Malawi - Discover FoodMaize is the staple cereal in Malawi, with a daily per capita consumption of 383 g (dry matter basis), primarily consumed in the form of nsima, a thick porridge. We combined a milling experiment with focus group discussions (FGDs) to provide insights into mass and nutrient losses during maize grain dehulling and maize flour consumption patterns in rural Malawi. Milling batches (30 kg) of four maize grain varieties were dehulled at three abrasive disk dehullers under controlled conditions. The impact of maize variety and dehuller design on mass and nutrient losses during dehulling was statistically significant (p < 0.05), with a mean mass loss of 28.1 ± 5.7%, and nutrient losses of 9.8 ± 1.9% for protein, 61.7 ± 2.0% for zinc, and 47.7 ± 3.6% for iron. Six FGDs conducted in rural areas of Lilongwe District revealed a preference for refined flour due to convenience and cultural norms, despite the nutritional benefits of whole grain flour, which was recognized for its ability to provide satiety, particularly during periods of maize scarcity. Participants also highlighted switching between flour types based on seasonal maize availability, social stigma associated with whole grain flour, and awareness of nutrient losses during dehulling. Given Malawi’s precarious food insecurity situation, transitioning from dehulled maize flour nsima to whole maize flour or less refined nsima, is imperative. Our study findings can have food and nutritional savings for other southern Africa countries where the dehulling is a common practice.

Most of the World Agrees #Israel’s Occupation of #Palestine Must End. The U.S. Is Fine With It.

The #UnitedStates voted against a #UN resolution that sets a 12-month timeframe to end Israel’s illegal occupation of the #WestBank, #EastJerusalem, and #Gaza.

September 18 2024,

"The #UnitedNations passed a historic resolution Wednesday that calls for the end of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, with 124 of the 181 member states voting in favor of the measure.

"The United States, alongside 13 other nations, voted against the resolution, continuing its unconditional support for Israel’s actions in Palestine.

"The sweeping resolution builds on an unprecedented July 19 ruling from the U.N.’s top court, the International Court of Justice[#ICJ], which declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories as an illegal, #apartheid system that must cease. The latest resolution, introduced by Palestine, affirms the July ruling, setting a 12-month timeframe for the withdrawal of Israeli military from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including the removal of Israeli settlers, a halt to Israel’s annexation of Palestinian land, as well as the return of land seized from Palestinians since the occupation began in 1967.

"Wednesday’s vote had 124 nations in favor of the resolution, 14 against, and 43 abstaining. In addition to the United States and Israel, the coalition of 14 nations opposing the resolution included just two European states, #Czechia and #Hungary; two South American countries, #Argentina and #Paraguay; the African nation of #Malawi; #PapuaNewGuinea; and six tiny Pacific Island nations.

“'This resolution makes it abundantly clear that the vast majority of the international community support the findings of the International Court of Justice that Israel’s 57-year occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory is a violation of international law and should not be allowed to continue,' said Jessica Peake, an international law professor at UCLA Law, adding that vote is 'historic' given Palestine’s status as a new member of the United Nations General Assembly.

"After the assembly approved a resolution — despite U.S. opposition — in May, the State of Palestine has been seated among member states and given the right to introduce proposals and participate in committees, but still cannot vote."
