Loch Coruisk in the Isle of Skye is one of the most spectacular and isolated places in the British Isles.  The head of this freshwater loch is surrounded on three sides by the imposing volcanic Black Cuillin while the southern end runs into a small rivulet, which then discharges into a sea loch, Loch Scavaig. As with much of the Highlands, once it would have been thickly wooded. Deforestation has left it all the bleaker.

“The foreground figures of cattle help establish the scale of this awe inspiring view over the remote Loch Coruisk. The Cuillin Mountains soar above the loch like gigantic waves.” In actual fact no livestock could ever have been placed there. It is a romanticised view from the 19th century.

“Yesterday three fire crews were battling a 150-metre wall of flame on the Isle of Skye as wildfires threatened huge swathes of the north’s landscape.

Large parts of the Scotland are currently covered by a severe wildfire warning and there have already been a large number of serious incidents.

Crews from Dunvegan, Portree and Kyle of Lochalsh were sent to the Glendale area of Skye shortly after midday.”

The law only allows burning to be carried out between October and mid-April. Most burning occurs in the spring when the plant material has dried out, allowing it to burn, while cold, damp conditions underfoot mean the fire is most easily controlled. Burns are not performed in summer because birds and other animals are breeding, the daily temperatures are warm, and underlying peat may have become drier. This fire in Glendale is on the other side of those hills. Smoke is drifting upwards and to the north. There were no casualties and it is now under control.

A bright sun in the clear blue sky over Harlosh Island in Loch Bracadale on Skye. This is the same sun that we are all under. The sun will run its course over the years. All will be well. Blue skies and optimism will win.

The Duirinish Stone was NOT erected thousands of years ago. Set in a concrete base, it stands approximately 5m high and was erected by hand. That is to say it was pulled up the hill and set in place by human power. See the ALT for more information…

“The stone is a commanding viewpoint for Dunvegan village and miles around, but it is not a prehistoric monument. Instead, it was erected on midsummer's day 2000 by the villagers of Dunvegan, using only hand power and ropes. As the stone is fifteen feet high and weighs five tons, this was an impressive feat, and presumably used the same techniques as would have been used to build stone circles thousands of years ago.” I am pleased to be able to go up there every week for the view and the celebration.

The spring equinox marks the start of astronomical spring.

The date is determined by the Earth's tilt on its axis as it travels around the Sun.
At the equinox, the Earth's axis is tilted neither towards nor away from the Sun, making day and night nearly equal in length.
Wherever you are on the planet, the equinox occurs at the exactly the same moment…

Here, on the Isle of Skye in 2025 the equinox is on Thursday the 20th March at 09:01 hours.

The word "equinox" comes from Latin, where equi means "equal" and nox means "night." It would be easy to assume that day and night would be of equal length of 12 hours each. However, that is not entirely true. At the equinox, the measurement is taken from when the centre of the Sun is at the horizon and there are12 hours between sunrise and sunset. The top edge of the Sun is visible first at sunrise and last at sunset. Due to light refraction, there is still light for a short time even when the sun is no longer visible. This adds a little extra time to daylight hours. In spring, this means that the date when day and night are actually equal happens before the equinox - known as the equilux which means "equal light". This year the equilux is on 17 March in the UK. One thing that is absolutely true is that beyond the equinox, days will be longer than nights, until the summer solstice on 21 June. This is Brodie. He is a Labrador Retriever of Red Fox colour. He is 4 years old and has a gentle and affectionate character. He doesn’t chase birds or cats, gets along with other dogs and all humans. He occasionally barks when some vehicle pulls up outside the house but reduces it to a ‘whisper bark’ when he sees what and who it is…

He works as part of the team here, welcoming and saying goodbye to our guests over the summer season.
