New on the blog: My first German language blog post.

Heute

Woop Woop! Guess who now has their own website 😃 ?

People asked me to download the slides from my talk at the @nllgg about #leavingBigTech and the #Fediverse so I made a little website for that.

I also figured that now that I have a website anyways, I may as well move the info I want to keep public from my #LinkedIn there, so I truly am on no #BigTech services anymore. So I did 🥳!

What I absolutely adore about the indie/ personal/ small web: Everybody's approach is very different. There are super modern looking websites and there are the ones who seem to come straight out of the 1990's/ early 2000's. There are ones that are specially made to work on the oldest computers. There are ones with and ones without Java Script. Ones made by pro web devs and ones made my people who are just starting to learn the basics. There are people who've been there from the beginning and those who are very new. And everything in between. People of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
In visiting personal websites you are seeing and experiencing the diversity of the world. And it's glorious!

I'm a bit obsessed with working on my website currently. And inspired by all the fantastic personal websites I'm finding. So here's another update to my website:
I added three pages: a sitemap, a page where I want to collect all the single pages I want to make, and one such single page.
I also put the change log on my
homepage into a scrollable box. I'm not super happy with how it looks, but I do like a scrollable box thing.
I am feeling a bigger re-design coming... I have ideas, but don't know when I'll actually sit down to try it out. I have some ideas of single pages first.

Last night I pushed some super basic custom CSS to my photo-focused GoToSocial profile @kamera@haugenh.us. While it's no Pixelfed, I like the simplicity of GtS.

To any considering running a personal fediverse instance, I highly recommend checking out GoToSocial. Don't be fooled by it's simplicity, it also gives control in a way no other fediverse platform I've tried has done, including interaction controls, control over post visibility – on ActivityPub as well as the web and RSS feeds – post importing and backdating, and of course custom CSS at both instance and profile levels.

Getting things up an running was easy for me due in large part to the fantastically motivated GtS community. Especially helpful for me were:

  • FediHost by @fedihost for a quick start through dead simple managed hosting.
  • Posty by @oli for a tool to manage old Pixelfed and Mastodon backups.
  • Slurp by @vyr to import and backdate posts from Mastodon and Pixelfed backups (some of which I needed to run through Posty first for reasons).

Make Your Own Website
web.pixelshannon.com/make

This guide is intended to help beginners make their first website with HTML/CSS.

I originally wrote it for my daughter, then 12 years old, so she could make a website for a school project. I think it is now complete-enough for anyone to follow to get started making a personal or hobby site.

Let me know what you think!
