One new addition to the perennial bed, one old friend. Since learning that goldenrod is not a hay fever contributor because its pollen is so heavy, I have allowed a couple of volunteers to grow. What a pollinator magnet it is! The old friend is Henry Eiler, in the background behind the goldenrod, but when in focus, we can see the lovely fluted petals. We see if @dillyd tells us the identities of the pollinators on the goldenrod. #perennial #pollinators #FlowerNotAWeed #BloomScrolling

Did you know that despite its name - #JapaneseAnemone - that this pretty #perennial #plant isn't actually from Japan?
It was introduced there, hundreds of years ago & became naturalized. It is actually native to China, #Taiwan & #Vietnam.
It's been cultivated in gardens, worldwide.
Hundreds of years ago, a form of E. hupehensis with smaller, semi-double flowers & pink sepals escaped cultivation and spread across #China to #Japan & #Korea. After finding this form in a #Shanghai graveyard in 1843, the plant explorer/ #botanist Robert Fortune sent it home to England where it became known as E. japonica, the Japanese anemone. European #horticulturists crossed the Japanese anemone with E. vitifolia to produce #cultivars of the artificial hybrid E. × hybrida.
#IndianGhostPipe - #MonotropaUniflora
Herbaceous, #perennial flowering plant.
It can't generate its own chlorophyll & is #parasitic - specifically #mycoheterotroph. Its #symbiotic #fungi hosts are in the #Russulaceae family.
Through the fungal web of #mycorrhizae, #GhostPipe roots sap food from where the host fungi are connected to the #photosynthetic #trees. Clustered node roots of this plant are covered in hairs called #cystidium. The #cystidia found on these roots allow easy attachment to #FungiHyphae. As it's not dependent on sunlight to grow, it can grow in very dark environments, like understories of forests.
#Indigenous #Cherokee peoples feature the "pipe plant" in some of their #CreationStories. The legend states that the plant was named "Indian pipe" due to a group of chiefs quarreling without resolution, while passing a pipe around during the dispute; the Great Spirit then turned the chiefs into the plant, as they should have smoked the sacred pipe after making peace with each other. The plant is said to grow wherever friends have quarreled.
Native to #PacificNorthwest & a few other areas too.
This was in Arkansas but, with the number of gun "enthusiasts" within earshot of my home, I'm leery of too much 'visibility'. I try to let my #polyculture #perennial #FoodForest, speak for itself. It doesn't shout or whine or threaten. it only gives back what we put into it. The yield in #biomass alone, from basically beach sand (very deep wind-flattened reforested dunes) has, over 10 years, astonished us. Took some energy to get it going, but it's up and running with deep roots. Soon leading a tour of the site as learning destination for students from regional colleges. We've shown how to use plants for #ecosystem enhancement under challenging conditions with fruitful yields (literally).
