Friday thoughts.

1) Canada was historically divided until Trump started making invady-noises.

2) We are now experiencing a rally around the flag like nothing for generations. We have found a common enemy.

3) America is incredibly divided to the point where opposition to Trump seems paralyzed.

4) Is the solution: for Canada to invade Point Roberts by force*

This is an unserious Friday thought. You're welcome.

@grammasaurus @gregggonsalves they're called "quacks." Have the unpleasant experience of dealing with just one of those, it can throw your faith in medicine completely out of whack. Some will never trust it again and others will become even more grateful for real Doctors. That's where the split between the educated blaming the system and the uninformed blaming medicine takes place, opening the door for politics. Why? Capitalism? A healthy nation is a strong nation, right? Seems like a nobrainer, what the current #POTUS would call, "common sense."

A quotation from Lincoln

I am loathe to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Speech (1861-03-04), Inaugural Address, Washington, D. C. (final paragraph)

US Senator Carl #Schurz of Utah once said, in a speech before the Senate,

My country, right or wrong; when right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be set right.
That is #patriotism.

When you stand up and declare, "Nothing my country does can be wrong, and nothing I do in the name of my country can be wrong," that is no longer patriotism. That is
#jingoism.

Learn the difference.

I remember when I was a kid they taught us the neutered version of This Land is Your Land in music class, minus the more explicitly socialist verses that are the best damn part. And I guess their way of "balancing" it politically if parents in our conservative district complained by also teaching us Lee Greenwood's shit-awful God Bless the USA which I hated back then before I even realized all the ways it sucked.

A quotation from Twain

You see my kind of loyalty was loyalty to one’s country, not to its institutions or its office-holders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death.

Mark Twain (1835-1910) American writer [pseud. of Samuel Clemens]
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, ch. 13 “Freemen!” (1889)
