[Thread] So, it took having to do a search on the website, but I managed to find the #BlackHistoryMonth audio archives on the #WMPG website. Hopefully, the ones from 2025 will also be posted on their website (and the ones already posted won't disappear...).

On ##ThisDayInHistory in 1990, #NelsonMandela was released by the #apartheid state of #SouthAfrica. He served 27 years as a political prisoner, often in isolation. In the negotiations and vote that followed, formal segregation was dismantled, but whites still own 3/4 of the land.

Today, we reflect on the legacy of #NelsonMandela, who passed away #onthisday in 2013.
In 1994, just months after becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Mandela spoke at Howard University’s Commencement Convocation, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws degree. In his speech, Mandela celebrated the transformative power of education, acknowledging Howard’s historic contributions to progress.

*NB: there's no verified evidence that he actually said or wrote it. Mandela spoke extensively on topics of unity, equality, and reconciliation, so the sentiment aligns with his beliefs, but this specific quote does not appear in his documented speeches or writings

Vote tallying from Wed's poll was in its final stages on Sat, w/results from 99.53% of polling stations giving the #ANC 40.21%.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), had 21.80%, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), a new party led by fmr president Jacob #Zuma, had 14.60%, while the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters ( #EFF), led by former ANC youth leader Julius #Malema, got 9.48%.
South Africans angry at joblessness, #inequality & power shortages have cut support for the #ANC to 40% in this week's election, ending 3 decades of dominance in #SouthAfrica by the party that freed the country from #apartheid.
A dramatically weakened mandate for the legacy party of #NelsonMandela, down from the 57.5% it got in the previous 2019 parliamentary election, means the ANC must share #power w/a rival in order to keep it.

I remember my mom taking me to see #NelsonMandela in #Montreal don’t remember what he said, but I remember how I felt. If we are still warring with our brothers and sisters it’s because we didn’t heed the words of our ancestors.
