The Departure of a Dignitary from Middelburg, Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne, 1615
All of Middelburg has turned out to watch the warship De Zeehondt is being towed out of the harbour, towards the sea, with the help of four sturdy draught horses. Someone of distinction is leaving here, because even Stadholder Maurice’s yacht takes part: it is firing a gun salute. The presence of an African child on the middle ship is notable.

Redingote or Great-Coat Dress, anonymous, c. 1786 - c. 1789
The origin of the redingote lies in long men’s coats with a cutaway front, the riding coat. It is a striking example of the influence men’s fashion exerted on women’s fashion. A redingote for ladies consisted of an overcoat or gown, and a loose skirt in a contrasting colour, which enhanced the coat-like effect. Olive green and pale pink were a popular combination at the end of the 18th century.

A Painter’s Studio, Michael Sweerts, c. 1646 - c. 1650
Like so many artists, Sweerts undertook a study trip to Rome. There he painted this scene of a painter’s studio, in which all the phases of artistic training are to be seen. At the left a young artist studies a large
anatomical figure; piled up at the right are fragments of antique statues. In the left background a painter sketches from a nude model; a completed painting hangs on the wall.

I built a cupboard for my moms mocca cup collection today. From click parquet wood parts, so there is a small groove to rest the saucers in and have them stand upright. My jigsaw is not the greatest but with some correction dremeling I got the parts to fit into one another. I mixed the Color from my paint pigments to match her other furniture. :) dimension is 1sq m. The cup is just my stand in.

Mantel clock with two vases, Jan Eisenloeffel, 1912
This richly ornamented ensemble of a clock and two vases was meant to be placed on a mantelshelf. The clock was shown at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. The medallions around the clock face advocate a harmonious division of personal time between mental and physical labour, play and rest. An inscription below the clock face translates as: ‘When the work of mind and hand unwinds in play and rest’.

Children Teaching a Cat to Dance, Known as The Dancing Lesson, Jan Havicksz. Steen, 1660 - 1679
These children are up to mischief: they are teaching a cat to dance to the music of a small shawm. Widely used between the 15th and 17th centuries, the shawm was the predecessor of the oboe. Mostly played in dance and ceremonial music, shawms were appreciated for their loud tone.
