#Protesters rally in #PortlandME, advocating for protection of rights amid Trump tensions

Story by Allyson Lapierre, WGME

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- "Making their voices be heard on a day of #revolution, a rally on Saturday pays tribute to the #250thAnniversary of the 'shot heard around the world,' a day that marks the start of the Revolutionary War.

" 'They’re taking away my Social Security and my #MaineCare away from me...which side are you on?' Olivia McDermott, who has #DownSyndrome, said.

"McDermott came to advocate for herself and others who have #disabilities who depend on #SocialSecurity and #Medicaid.

" 'I get really upset that this is happening to me and other people with #disabilities. They go to school like this, and I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable about it,' McDermott said.

"Olivia's mom, Maura Mcdermott, is a #SpecialEducationTeacher. She's worried the $Trump administration could take away those benefits.

" 'We need to not cut the services. We need to expand #MedicaidForAll people, and we need to #TaxTheRich. Enough of this,' Maura said.

"Other protestors voiced concerns about state politics, specifically about Maine senators.

" '#SusanCollins had better vote 'no, no, no' to the #SAVEAct because those are all voting rights, and we need voting for next election,' Nina McKee, a Scarborough resident, said.

"Despite the anniversary of the #AmericanRevolution, protesters on Saturday said there's little to feel #patriotic about.

" 'I can’t even express the need for us to stand up against what is happening in our country. It is beyond consumption,' McKee said.

" 'There’s no good thing going on right now, so any change is for the better,' Duncan Potter, a Brunswick resident, said."

Wait, what?!! #SenatorSusanCollins is actually concerned?!!!

Sen. Collins' bill would return #tariff control to Congress

April 8, 2025

"Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins is looking to reign in tariffs by reasserting congressional control.

"A bill she's sponsoring, backed by some Republicans and Democrats, requires a president to explain reasoning and impacts of new tariffs within 48 hours and all new tariffs would expire after 60 days unless Congress approved them.

"Senator Collins writes: 'The unilateral imposition of tariffs by the president without congressional oversight undermines Congress’ constitutional role and can have serious consequences for American workers and businesses.'

"The bill appears to have little chance of getting through the House side or if it got that far, overriding a certain presidential veto."

#UniversityOfMaine’s #USDA funding restored

by WABI News Desk
Published: Mar. 12, 2025 at 9:05 PM EDT

Maine (WABI) - "Senator #SusanCollins announced Wednesday that the University of Maine’s funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been restored.

"On Monday the University received notice that funding from the USDA was paused.

"According to UMS, the notice stated the pause was temporary while the USDA evaluated potential follow-up actions related to prospective Title VI (6) or Title IX (9) violations.

"Collins released at statement saying:

'This USDA funding is critically important not only to the University of Maine, but to our farmers and loggers, as well as to the many people who work in #Maine’s #agriculture, #aquaculture, and #forestry industries. Now that funding has been restored, the work that the University does in partnership with the many people and communities who depend on these programs can continue.'"

@DemocracyMattersALot #lisamurkowski and #susancollins vote against trump all the time. Why? Because they were elected in states that have open primaries and #rankedchoicevoting. They are immune to the threat of well funded primary challenges from MAGA candidates because MAGA candidates would never win an open primary and ranked choice voting benefits candidates with broad appeal. They are free to speak up for the people they actually represent.

Or is it because Susan Collins is resisting?

“President Donald Trump is threatening to cut federal funding to Maine because transgender athletes are allowed to compete in girls’ sports,” the Portland Press Herald reports.

Said Trump: “I hate to tell you this, but we’re not going to give them any federal money. They’re still saying they want men to play in women’s sports, and I cannot believe they’re doing that.”
