I had a great morning's birding at Welney, with highlights including ducks, avocets, and three kinds of egret. There was also a spoonbill and a white fronted goose, QED:

A spoonbill standing in grass, preening its wing with its, um, spoonbill, leaving you in no doubt that it is a spoonbill

A white fronted goose floating on water. It is a grey goose but, get this, you'll never guess... the front of its face is white!

The photo you probably expect to see on Occasional Pictures of Ducks... two mallards, a male and a female, facing each other on calm water.

Altijd een blij weerzien met de eerste #lepelaars op #Schiermonnikoog. Op https://maps.nioz.nl/spoonbills-NL/ kun je volgen waar de gezenderde lepelaars zich nu bevinden.

Uitgestrekte vlakte met hoog gras en een groep witte vogels met lange snavels op de voorgrond. Eentje heeft de vleugels wijd gespreid om te landen.

Un groupe de d'oiseaux limicoles en vol rapide. Ils exposent leurs dos et les differences plumages, de taille de bec ou la position des pattes permets de différencier les espèces. Ici il y a des chevaliers arlequins (corps gris, tache blanche sur le dos, long bec et pattes rouges) et des combattants variés (plumage marron et écaillé, bec court et blanc sur la queue)

Un groupe de grands cormorans qui nagent dans l'eau d'un étang. Leurs corps sont enfoncés dans l'eau et seul le haut du dos, leur cou et leur tête dépasse. Certains plongent.

Against a brilliant blue sky a large bird of many subtle hues of pink flies from left to right. The sun illuminates its feathers making thicker sections of wing deeper pink and the thin trailing edges closer to white. Its long bill is shaped like a spatula, or spoon, hence the name. Long, thin black feet trail behind.

A few Roseate Spoonbills spent part of the summer of 2018 at some wetlands in Raleigh, NC. Lots of birders were able to see this "usually-in-Florida" species. Attached are a few photos from when we went to see them.

A Roseate Spoonbill perches on a branch which has fallen in the water. The bird is facing right. The bird's wings are partially extended, as the bird is trying to keep its balance on the branch. The bird has a long flesh-colored bill which is wider at the outer end. In this image, the bird's body seems very whitish. The extended wings show fairly bright pink highlights. The bird's legs are fairly stout for a wading bird, and sharply bent at the knee. The water seems gray. Two ducks are in the bottom right of the image, with their heads below the water.

A Roseate Spoonbill perches calmly on a branch which has fallen in the water. The bird is facing right. The bird has a long flesh-colored bill which is wider at the outer end. The bird's head is at the end of a gracefully curved neck. The head seems too little for such a long neck. The bird's body seems whitish, with faint hints of pink. A duck is in the lower left corner of the image. The duck's head is underwater.

A Roseate Spoonbill feeds in some water, facing left. The spoonbill's long bill is partially under water. Its long neck is sharply curved. The bird's back and folded wings are showing a hint of pink. Behind the spoonbill (away from the photographer) are three Canada Geese, all facing left. They are brown-bodied with black necks and faces. The faces have white patches. Between the spoonbill and the geese is a single duck with its head under the water.

Today’s music is an album by Spoonbill - Mosaic Shuffle. Rich and full of fun little elements, relaxing but groovy, I can’t recommend his albums enough. I find that a lot of songs will play with your expectations of when a theme will come back around, it always makes me smile when it gets me.
