#SJEarts has become known for its Piano Series, operating out of St John the Evangelist Church in #Oxford.

there are now two dozen violins in my #PirateLuthier logbook. Eight of them are in house and ready to play so if anybody in #Oxford needs to borrow a #fiddle (good enough for #folk or amateur #orchestra) do get in touch. (bows and cases are limited, so will be easier to help out ppl who still have those eg because their #violin broke)

response from our #Oxford city councillor re #Uber:

Since Uber provided all the necessary documentation to apply for an operator's licence in Oxford, the City Council had no grounds, on which to refuse them. Legally, we were obliged to issue them with a licence.

Is this true? I was under the impression that local authorities can set rules for transport operators, and with a bit of creativity one could have avoided uberisation.

Sad – though not surprised – to see what was anticipated almost a decade ago is now the norm in some places.

According to the University and College Union, nearly two-thirds of essential tutorial teaching at Oxford is carried out by academics employed on precarious short-term contracts or paid by the hour in a manner akin to Uber-style gig economy work.

“They compared our work to bedroom fitters, security guards and cleaners, and I kept thinking: ‘Yes, and all those people have no chance of fighting the gig economy, but we do.’”

The book considers the contemporary university, itself subject to such entrepreneurial practices, as one polemical site for the affirmative disruption of this model.
