The rainy season has started in Guatemala, and so have the trash floods.
Interceptor 006, deployed since 2023 in the Rio Las Vacas, was there to catch this trash tsunami and prevent tons of waste from reaching the ocean with both its upstream and downstream barriers.
Where does this trash come from?
Due to waste management challenges, heavy rains wash vast quantities of plastic and other waste from Guatemala City and the surrounding area into the Rio Las Vacas, a tributary of the Rio Motagua, which flows into the Caribbean Sea.
Are Interceptors a replacement for waste management and infrastructure? No. Governments and many local organizations are already focused on improving solid waste management systems.
Our aim is to provide an alternative solution that complements the broad range of actions for the ultimate goal of having clean oceans.
