On this day in 1915, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the "original soul sister" and "Godmother of rock and roll" was born.

"Rock 'n' roll was bred between the church and the nightclubs in the soul of a queer black woman in the 1940s named Sister Rosetta Tharpe."

40 years ago this week, "Relax" by #FrankieGoesToHollywood entered the #Top10 and peaked at 10. If you're thinking we already saw this go by, you're right. However, when "Two Tribes" came out a year later, "Relax" climbed the charts again. Since I already posted the music video, here's an early performance from before they had a record contract. youtube.com/watch?v=HPRsmeUbE- #1980s #MusicHistory #MusicVideo

today my long-planned research appointment at the Tamiment Library & Wagner Labor Archives at NYU has finally come up. I'm mainly looking for music union materials from before WWII (A.F.M. locals 310 + 802) and maybe stuff about United Hebrew Trades if they have anything relevant to me. we'll see what I can find! If nothing else the union members booklets with address (of which I've only seen snippets on facebook) will be quite helpful.

Looks messy, but this is a great archival document of New York klezmer history. It's a burial map of the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society's section at Beth Israel cemetery in New Jersey. This was a mutual aid society of mostly klezmer musicians and their families, but also some theatre and classical musicians of immigrant Jewish backgrounds. The list of names isn't online like their plot at Mt Hebron cemetery is. Great way to find out about forgotten musicians 👀

At pettiness which plays so rough
 Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough

 You say you’re shakin’
 And you’re always achin’
But you know how hard you try
Sometimes it gets so hard to care
It can’t be this way ev’rywhere
