Nessus Sphinx Moth (Amphion floridensis) enjoying some bluebells this past week. They are neat little day flying moths and kinda look like hummingbirds, I think.

A reddish brown hummingbird looking moth with two bright yellow stripes on its abdomen and almost clear wings hovers as it enjoys nectar from a virginia bluebell flower. The flowers are periwinkle in color, with the younger buds more pink. Leaves are bright spring green. The scene is very vibrant

But this #Colombian #PlumeMoth (no species identification yet, but I did get some real photos of it) came indoors with me after I checked my #moth light last night.

When I don't know what to paint I start doing those bone tiddy Halloween decorations. Back of the base says 99 cents but I got it for 50 cents at the thrift store lol

Will get some brown and yellow tones in, deepen the blacks later...

BUG MAGNETS

4/5 of the first handmade felt magnet prototypes have been assembled and I am so excited to make the last one!
These will be available through two listings: beetles and moths, allowing you to get them individually, or as a set.
I’m really really proud of them and I really can’t wait to release them into the world!

Light rain and cloud meant a few more moths (and a bumble bee!) came out to play at 'Chez Mothman' last night.

Still no real species diversity yet, but, compared to last year, #moth numbers seem encouraging. May/June/July will tell for sure.

First sighting in 2025 of the very unfairly named CLOUDED DRAB. Yes, like me, he's plain and unexciting, but undeserving of such an unflattering moniker.

Overhead shot of 1.5 centimetre narrow arrowhead shaped moth on a finger. It is a largely dull grey colour with hints of red, and specked with white. There is a wavy pale line running left to right a few millimetres from the bottom wing edge. Its head has a diamond shape mass of fine iron grey hair.

Met this lovely Japanese owl moth (Brahmaea japonica) during a walk the other day. Looked up some details and they say that it’s pretty rare type of moth that we can only see during late March and early April. Think I was lucky

A good-sized fluffy moth (about 10cm wingspan) with nice tiger-like black, brown, and white stripes perching on a wall.

Milder night last night so chanced the #moth box. Still early in the year so very few species / numbers yet (roll on May/June). More Common Quakers (x4) & Early Grey (x1). Also first sighting in 2025 of Oak Beauty and Small Quaker. Moths on my finger today are...

A medium-sized 3cm triangular moth perched on a finger. Three distinct horizontal bands of chestnut, white and chestnut again separated by jagged black lines. It has a furry head and a creamy yellow furry abdomen. It has large feathered antennae which it is curling underneath itself. It looks very freshly emerged.

A small 1cm rather plain, peppery light brown moth on a finger. It has a sandy brown furry head and two faint stigmata on each wing, one orbital, one reniform.

A 1.5cm narrow arrow-head shaped moth on a finger. It is a sandy, gingery-brown colour. It looks freshly emerged. It has a diamond shaped furry head. Its wings are gingery brown with two stigmata on each wing, one orbital, one reniform. Near the bottom of each wing is a horizontal, thin wavy line of brown which separates the ginger brown wing above with a lighter brown segment below it. Thus, resembling a hem or a fringe. The hem is also peppered with a row of faint black dots running uniformly from wing edge to wing edge.

A small 1.5cam narrow arrow-head shaped moth on a finger tip. It is much like the Common Quaker before in shape and size but is silvery-grey flecked with flashes of black. Two grey stigmata on each wing, one orbital and one reniform. It has two thin pipe-cleaner like antennae which stretch out horizontally either side of its head.

A Bag-shelter Moth (Ochrogaster lunifer) clinging for dear life onto a sliding metal door rail, hanging precipitously above a 1 inch drop to the decking far below.

So hairy!

Found on a sendudok bush, this spiky caterpillar from the family Lasiocampidae was as long as my middle finger. I thought of bringing it home so that I could brag to peoples that "I has a pet lappet".
