Mitchell Leisen's MIDNIGHT (1939) w/ Claudette Colbert is coming to Criterion Blu-ray in a new 4K restoration.
Sparkling screwball comedy w/ a heavy dose of social satire from screenwriters Charles Bracket and Billy Wilder!
Among all the people Godard was thinking about casting as King Lear, he missed the obvious choice right in front of him: Menahem Golan.
One of my favorite movies, Midnight (1939), is currently on the Criterion Channel.
It’s a fun take in the Cinderella story, with delightful performances by the legendary John Barrymore, a young Don Ameche, and academy award winning actress Claudette Colbert.
It’s absolutely worth a watch if you have access to it.

One of my favorite end of year pleasures is the #Criterion room-tone montage #video
[And, at the risk of sounding pretentious, it seems to me that, although everyone loves movies (probably), if one doesn't recognize at least 80% of the folks featured in this video one is not a cinephile.

The chase scene ends in a bathroom, with a bathtub full of water. A Luger is involved, which is how we know which British actors are playing Germans. And a bar of soap, used in Pythonesque jape fashion, which ends up in the hand of the proprietor after a clasic slip. Shown here in a fuzzy screen cap (since #Criterion hides the video). Just after, the bar goes in their pocket.
I'm mesmerized by the Criterion Closet videos, wherein actors or directors are set loose to exclaim over their favorites — in that magic little room stacked floor to ceiling with the world's most notable films, on Blu-ray or DVD. This episode from 2015, though, with Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory of the sublime "My Dinner With Andre," features weirdly low-energy lighting & discussion. Which last may be explained by Shawn's final words here:

Checked out the mobile Criterion Closet van earlier today while I'm visiting NYC for the New York Film Festival as a friend invited me to the festival.
Seeing it in the wild instead of pics online is a much more of a fun experience.
My Closet pics in the Polaroid photo:
The Red Shoes (1948)
Midnight Cowboy (1969)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
PAPER MOON (1973) helped turn me into a classic film lover.
As a kid, I was convinced it was an actual old movie — and I wanted to see more like it. So glad to hear it's coming to Criterion Blu-ray and 4K in Nov.
Watched "Blue Collar" yesterday, via #Criterion stream. Late 1970s, with Richard Pryor, Yaphet Kotto, and Harvey Keitel. All looking lean and hungry, this is no "Silver Streak" silliness. Roger Ebert at the time called it radical.
Auto factory workers find their union is as corrupt as management, running loan sharking and worse. Alas, a very unhappy ending.
Anyone subscribed to The Criterion Channel streaming service? Curious your experience with it.
