How much bullshit does #Dutton think the Australian electorate can handle without throwing up? From his performance on the hustings to date a lot more than what we’ve seen/heard so far. Hence #PotatoHead is either a complete moron or he is take the piss and makes the electorate look like a bunch of f**wits. Neither position is tolerable for an aspiring PM. Australia… do your constitutional job!

Here’s hoping every Australian wakes up in time for #AusElection25

I live in the seat of Page. Our current MP is Kevin Hogan who is also the shadow trade minister, meaning if the LNP wins he will be the guy handling all of these trade issues with the US.

Page also has Casino, the beef capital of Australia. The LNP want to sidle up to the US but this leaves a conflict of interest - does he side with his electorate and protect the beef industry (which has been a focus of Trump's), or does he side with his party and screw us over?

Interestingly, Labor have a candidate in the area called Wendy Backhaus but I can't find any information on her. The ALP site has a list of all candidates: alp.org.au/our-people/our-peop and the seat of Page isn't listed. I would have thought given the global issues right now and who the opposition is here that they might make an effort.

Does anyone have a way to ask Labor if they plan on doing anything in this seat?

The #UnitedStates did not listen to #Trump on the electoral trail and they are paying for it in spades. Hear what #Dutton says here:

“We will end the reckless $20bn rewiring the nation fund. We will stop the $10bn housing Australia future fund, which has not built a single additional home.
We will scrap Labor’s $16bn of production tax credits over the next decade for critical minerals and green hydrogen.
We will reverse Labor’s increase of 41,000 Canberra-based public servants – saving $7bn a year.”

and also here:

“We will accelerate new investment in gas projects by reinstating a $300m strategic basin plan and include gas in the capacity investment scheme.
We will invest $1bn in a critical gas infrastructure fund to increase gas pipeline and storage capacity.
We will put in place ‘use it or lose it’ stipulations for gas drilling companies – so offshore gas fields are not locked up for years.”

And BE WARNED Australia, put the #LNP first o #AusElection25 and it will come about and then some…. Think before you cast your vote!

Ring the ALARM Bells…. #Privatisation of public transport infrastructure ensures a decline in services and early retirement of infrastructure assets due to cuts made in order to produce profit for investors. Private enterprise strip the assets bare and then put their greedy little hands out for govt #subsidies to get them out of presumed financial trouble (no one is looking at their deep pockets full of stolen $$ here). It has always been so, it will always be so… what’s so hard to understand here? It plain old #StateTheft. Your tax money going straight into private pockets.

After, God I don’t know, one hundred years, govt still make the stupidest decisions and hand over public assets for ‘stripping’ by grifter mates…

Come on Aussies. Don’t vote those fuckers in again… Jezzzz…

Speaking as a European, Id like to be reassured that EU+UK are going to dump USA in future given the blatant unerring hostility of JD Vance towards us.
And speaking as a Brit-Aussie dual national, Id like to be reassured that the Aus govt does NOT kowtow to US govt and allow them to bleed us dry of minerals, money and land to build their frigging bases against China.

Its us who would get ripped off and bombed.
Think about that.

From Alan Kohler’s column ( abc.net.au/news/2025-03-24/dem ):

“This is a time when clear political vision and decisive leadership is called for, when the stakes for tomorrow's federal budget and the coming election couldn't be higher. Not that you would know it from the grubby squabbles that pass for national debate these days.”

Kohler identifies climate action, the retreat of America from democracy and world order, and China’s lead in robotics as the global trends about to change the world as we know it.

While the ‘grubby’ side of #AusPol in an #AusElection25 year is dull, I think that the #CostOfLivingCrisis cannot be left out as the number 1 issue with the electorate. Every other domestic issue stems from that single focus and the election will be won or lost on that hill IMO.

The one thing I do not completely agree with Alan Kohler is his prognosis for a massive loss of jobs due to #AI and #Robotics . IA is a big marketing campaign and will ultimately fail (though niche markets will continue to benefit from advances in GAI and maybe future AGI developments - but the latter is a big if). As for robotics, we’ve had them for decades (EG. Toyota Factory automation). They are both expensive and not ‘clever’. Moreover, automation of tasks has meant a transfer of human effort to other (new) jobs. In short, the rise in robot use is an indication of society in transition - wherever that leads to..

Lastly, Clear and Decisive leadership is a perennial requirement for good govt no matter the environment in which they must perforce operate. I normally enjoy reading Alan’s columns but not this one so much…

ABC News · We're at a turning point in world history but our leaders are distractedBy Alan Kohler

‘Ahead of next week’s federal budget, it is time to remind you of my budget commandment: “Everything is affordable if the government chooses to care about it.” There has never been a true priority of a government, or an emergency, or urgent expense which has not been paid for because the government could not afford it, because it had to “live within its means”.

I point this out because we are going to hear a lot about budget decisions and deficits and I want you all to realise that every single thing done and not done in the budget is because of a choice made by the government. Nothing happens “just because”.’

Greg Jericho repeats his mantra. TBF, he is 100% correct.

March 25th is going to be interesting. I’m betting #Dutton ‘s reply speech will not disappoint all the RWNJs who support the policy-less #Noalition

Gone are the days when a ‘good job’ gets you a house – and now we have the data to prove it theguardian.com/business/grogo?

Every economic modeling shows that it is now impossible to save enough to purchase a house. Clearly something needs to be done to address the broken housing system. And although we are months away from a federal election, neither of the major parties have announced anything remotely effective to address the issue of #Housingaffordability

#GregJericho does an effective job at showing the impossibility of saving enough for a deposit. Seems like the only peeps who can afford to purchase a house these days are poliies, real estate investors (a very successful one being #Dutton also a pollie) and the top 10% of Australian society. Clearly should be an election issue but from our pollies… crickets….

“Belinda Jones (Independent Australia 31/8/2024) provided 64 reasons why Dutton is unfit to be PM. Most readers could probably find even more and in the coming months up the election we will keep track of them.

Jones said: “Since assuming office as the Member for Dickson in November 2001, Dutton has regularly graced front pages due to offensive comments, uttered falsehoods, hypocrisy, misogynistic remarks, wildly inflammatory statements lacking evidence, funding scandals, ministerial interventions, statements lacking evidence and other faux pas – with incompetence on top of it all.”

One thing he is brilliant at is claiming that his remarks are taken out of context, denied or misunderstood” source: johnmenadue.com/duttons-stuff-

“Hastie told Sky News this morning the Coalition would “rebuild” the ADF, but he wouldn’t say where the money would come from.”

He is quoted as saying :”Under Labor, our defence force has been driven into the ground. Morale is at an all-time low, we have a recruiting crisis, we have a retention crisis, we have a readiness crisis … And given today’s dangerous strategic circumstances, we are investing in it.” Source: theguardian.com/australia-news?

#Hastie is simply making this up to make it look like the #Labor govt dropped the ball on #Defence whereas in fact Labor is doing no such thing: “The Labor government plans to spend $48.699 billion on defence this financial year, in line with the funding trajectory established by the former Coalition government.” Source: australiandefence.com.au/defen

There are two things to remember about the #Coalition the first is that (as right wingers often do) it is projecting its own side’s political deficiencies onto the opposite side of the chamber regardless of the truth of the matter (shit sticks, right?) and secondly, a corollary of the first, the Coalition has long had long term memory issues, especially about their last, sadly too long, stint in govt.

The unfortunate thing is that #CorporateMedia chooses to overlook this in their haste to promote into govt a Coalition of willing partners to the grifting system they feed on. Sadly more unfortunately, are the
disillusioned hordes who lap up the swill #MainMedia dishes out on a daily basis. shit sticks, right?

The #Coalition is long in the tooth, a long way from telling the truth, and a long way from being able to form a decent govt for all Australians. IMO, the Coalition should have long stay in opposition.

After shredding #PotatoHead ‘s performance as an ‘alternative PM’, Joe Dyer, in The Shot, concludes his piece with a logical assertion:

“Australia isn’t the US and a general election is no referendum. When called to demonstrate his credentials as an alternative Prime Minister, Dutton will need more than fanboy copycatting, cynical posturing and the flimsiest of policy fig-leaves.”

I couldn’t agree more. Here is hoping the #AustralianElectorate see it that way as well.

The Guardian · Third-party groups join election fray with accusations Greens and teals threaten Australia’s ‘stability’By Ariel Bogle

From a Conversation article by Intifar Chowdhury which is looking at the progressive-conservative divide in generational and gender groupings and how it might affect #AusElection25.

“Unsurprisingly, people vote according to who they think will best address the policy areas they care about most.

Those prioritising interest rates, taxation or economic management favour right-wing parties. Voters most concerned with health, Medicare and climate change are more likely to vote for the left.

Education, class and social networks matter, too. Highly educated, working-class, non-religious and union-affiliated voters tend to support left parties. So, too, do those raised in left-leaning households.”

According to the above, the author implies that voters likely to vote for the #Coalition are worried about interest rates, taxation and economic management are less likely to be highly educated and more likely to be religious (ie. we know bugger all but we’ll swallow the swill the #LNP dishes out and pray to God that all will be fine when they get into govt).

Our saving grace is that #GenZ and #Millennials now outnumber #BabyBoomers (thank fuck for that! At last!) which presumes a shift to the left of politics in the coming elections (ie. because they care about preventing a scorched planet and surviving climate change).

Bottom line is that while the electorate appears to be more left-leaning, #Labor has a tough assignment if it wishes to capture those votes. Should it fail to do so (and there is every indication that it will), the likely outcome will be a minority govt with the balance of power firmly in the left camp. Not such a bad outcome after all. Let’s do our civic duty with a clear and logical mind folks.
