A peaceful January evening at Eagle Lake, CA. This area, known as "Heart Failure," once had more water and was a prime fishing spot. The name might come from the sharp turn on the icy road leading here—definitely not for the faint of heart!

With the fishing season closed and mild weather, only a thin layer of ice formed on the lake, beautifully reflecting the pastel sky as the sun dipped below the horizon. Moments like these make winter strolls unforgettable.

I grabbed this image on a January evening stroll on the north shore of Eagle Lake, just a few miles from the community of Spalding. Back when there was more water here, it was a great fishing spot known as "Heart Failure." I've never been 100% sure where it gets its name, but I've always assumed it had something to do with the steep grade ending in a tight turn on the country road (Lassen County A1) leading to it, which can be fairly spooky when it ices up. Back then (2020), the fishing season was closed anyway, and the weather had been mild, so the lake only had a bit of ice on it—which I thought looked pretty nice under the pastel skies that appeared when our little star dipped below the horizon.

Silent Sunday

Last Sunday Sunset of this year.

The sunset, silent and bathed in warm golden light, marks one of the final moments of the year. The shadows of the trees stretch long as the sun, now low on the horizon, seems to slowly slip away, much like the year that is coming to an end. The scene, devoid of sound and interruption, reflects the feeling of a cycle closing, a step toward the unknown, much like the sun setting, signaling the end of a day. The sky is painted in golden and pink hues, while the world around feels suspended, waiting for a new beginning.
But for now, there is only silence.
