Almost 32% of the EVs sold in Australia is 2024 had #V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability, i.e. provided a 230V AC outlet. These were mainly #BYD, #MG, #Kia, #Hyundai and #Genesis models.

They do this by having a small inverter in the car to convert the DC from the battery pack into usable AC power ranging from 2.2kW to 3.3kW, either inside the car and/or via an external adaptor plugged into the AC charge port. Here are the top 25 models from 2024 and whether they currently support V2L and some photos of various model V2L adaptors.

V2L is a useful capability to use your EV battery to run small appliances when away camping or during a power blackout like your fridge, freezer, phone chargers, internet routers and even dialysis machines.

Unfortunately many of the biggest selling EV brands don’t support V2L yet, e.g. #Tesla, #BMW, #Volvo, #Mercedes and #Polestar

Fortunately third parties are working on V2L devices as a retrofit option for Teslas, which don’t currently have V2L, using an external inverter.

kickstarter.com/projects/vorti

Using an external inverter to provide V2L, connects directly to the EV battery DC via the CCS2 plug, and is a more expensive solution than a V2L adaptor provided by the EV manufacturer, which uses an inverter inside the EV.

This technology is similar to how future #V2H and #V2G could work on existing EVs.

How EVs can store energy for homes and power grids
dw.com/en/how-evs-can-store-en

Batteries not only power electric cars, but can supply energy to buildings and stabilize power grids, through bidirectional charging known as Vehicle-To-Grid. #V2G

With a bidirectional charging station, solar power can flow from the roof of a house into the car battery during the day, and back into the building from the car in the evening. This means residents can use cheap solar power both day and night.

Deutsche Welle · How EVs can store energy for homes and power gridsBy Gero Rueter

Today is a good day to top up our car using the Sun, and contemplate some future upgrades to our solar power system.

We currently have a 6 kW inverter, solar panels rated for a total of 8 kW, and no home storage battery. Adding a battery so we can store our surplus solar power (even when our car is not at home and plugged in) and use it through the evening would be great, and now that the NSW home battery technically-not-a-rebate scheme is up and running it would be a bit more economical. With an electric car, electric (heat pump) hot water, and a battery we would really benefit from a capacity upgrade, too, though. On a hot, sunny day like today I'd really like to be able to run the car charger at max power (7 kW), have the air conditioner on, and still have a bit left over to put into the battery for later. For that I'd need 10 kW in inverter(s) and as many additional solar panels as will fit in the remaining space on our roof, bringing the total to at least 12 kW total rated power

Adding to the options over the next year or so is the promise of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) regulations and the subsequent availability here of bi-directional electric car chargers. These will make it possible to draw power from the car's battery for use in the home or export to the grid, and at least some of these bi-directional chargers, such as the ambibox x Red Earth ones, are likely to be compatible with existing electric cars such as ours.
