Hungary passes constitutional changes targeting LGBTQ rights.

Hungarian lawmakers on Monday voted to approve new constitutional changes proposed by the populist ruling party that target the LGBTQ community, including codifying into law a ban on Pride events, and a provision proclaiming that people can only be male or female.

The new amendments were pushed through by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party.

BUDAPEST, Hungary — "Thousands of protesters rallied for the fourth week in Hungary’s capital on Tuesday, denouncing a new law passed by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s nationalist government banning LGBTQ Pride events.

"The legislation, fast-tracked through parliament in March, prohibits events depicting #homosexuality to those under the age of 18 and has drawn comparisons to Russia’s anti-LGBTQ policies. It comes as Orbán’s administration is increasingly accused of democratic backsliding ahead of national elections next year.

"The weekly protests in #Budapest have persisted, and on Tuesday, demonstrators filled the #ErzsébetBridge over the #Danube, demanding the withdrawal of the law. Some planned to remain on the bridge throughout the night and said there were plans to shut down all five central Danube bridges.

No violence was immediately reported.

"The law makes it an offense to hold or attend events such as Pride, which some legal experts and human rights groups say is #Orbán’s latest crackdown on Hungary’s #LGBTQ community and an arbitrary restriction on the #RightToAssembly."

Peter #Szijjarto, Hungary’s foreign minister, said EU sanctions against the Kremlin had been “ridiculous” and a “failure”, which did more economic damage to Europe than Russia.

But he admitted Budapest could U-turn if the White House decided to hit the Kremlin.

#Belgium would not arrest Israeli prime minister Benjamin #Netanyahu if he visited the country, according to his Belgian counterpart Bart De Wever. "I don't think there is any European country that would arrest Netanyahu," he told VRT's Terzake talk show on Thursday evening.

Late last year, the International Criminal Court ( #ICC) in The #Hague issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu for alleged #warcrimes in #Gaza. Hungarian prime minister Viktor #Orban then invited him to visit #Hungary. During Netanyahu's visit to #Budapest on Thursday, Hungary announced it would withdraw from the ICC.

On Terzake, De Wever said he "understands" Orban's decision not to arrest Netanyahu. "I think we wouldn't do it either, to be quite honest." According to De Wever, no #European country would comply with the ICC arrest warrant. "There is such a thing as realpolitik," he said, adding that he did not agree with Orban's decision to withdraw from the ICC.
