Celebrating 70 Years of Puffing Billy as a
Preserved Railway!
Today marks a remarkable milestone-70 years since Puffing Billy's first run as a preserved railway!
On Easter Saturday, 9 April 1955, history was made as locomotive 3A departed Upper Ferntree Gully, marking the beginning of regular operations on the line to Belgrave.
That day, Puffing Billy became the second operating preserved railway in the world and the first ever on a Government-owned railway!
This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the vision and determination of five passionate gentlemen from the Citizens' Committee, who negotiated with the Victorian Railways Commissioners to restore operations. Without their efforts, Puffing Billy may have been lost forever.
Here's to 70 years of preservation, passion, and unforgettable journeys-and many more to come!
