#Germany, #Birdflu virus detected in laying #hens in Emsland, ndr.de/nachrichten/niedersachs

There is an outbreak of the highly contagious bird flu, also known as avian influenza, in Emsland. As the Friedrich Loeffler Institute confirmed on Monday, the virus was detected in a free-range laying hen farm in Emsbüren. According to the Emsland district, all 11,500 animals on the farm had to be killed.

Leading food companies have announced their support to ban cages for UK hens. Recent polling also shows that you, the public, support a ban, so when will the Government act?

Please use the following page to email the new Defra Secretary of State asking him to publish a long-overdue consultation, introduce a ban on new cage systems and phase out all cage systems for egg laying hens.

action.ciwf.orgEnd the Cage Age for millions of UK hensDid you know that 8 million egg laying hens in the UK are still confined in cages? If you want UK egg production to be 100% cage-free, join me today and email the new Secretary of State at Defra.

Grocery store egg carton from which I took my breakfast egg today proclaims in bold print "Pasture-Raised." So, good, right? Then below that: "Hens fed a vegetarian diet." Also good, maybe.

Except that if there are no bugs out in the pasture to put a little non-veg content in their diet, sounds like it must be an herbicide heavy pasture.

Farm 4: #RatfordFarm, Wales
Director: Scott Bailey
A small, local and wholesale farm

#BFREPA Director Scott Bailey's farm supplies eggs locally direct from his farm gate and wholesale across #Pembrokeshire. Despite being a 'small, local farm', the scenes were similarly horrific.

We filmed extreme crowding, leaving these hens little room to move. Dead #hens were left rotting on the slatted floors whilst others stepped over them. Several birds pecked at the wing of a recently deceased hen

Karen has even won an award for her 'outstanding contribution to the Scottish #poultry industry' but the Rotten truth at her farms was far from award-winning.

Despite the fact that free-range #hens are supposed to have continuous daytime access to the outside, we filmed hens imprisoned inside on four separate days.

Amongst #sickness, #injuries and debeaked hens, we found dead hens' bodies scattered in the deep filth of the shed floors. These hens appeared to have had their necks snapped

"Mad as a wet hen" must not mean what I always thought it means.

I have assumed that it means something like: hens don't like to be wet, so if they get wet then they get really angry.

Where I live it's been grey all day and there's been a drizzly rain most of the daylight hours. Wet. Our hens have all been outside. All day. Wet.

And not a single one gives any indication of being angry.

So the saying "mad as a wet hen" must mean mad, as in crazy. Because there's nothing stopping them from going inside, except I guess that on sunnier days they don't go inside until evening. They're just a little wack-o, loopy, batty.

Next time you hear about wet hens being mad, think more along the lines of the Mad Hatter. At least if they're our hens you're hearing about.
