Another volunteer work day at the Nature Sanctuary. Never really know what to expect so just prepare for range of tasks to fit whatever need is most important at the time. Always interesting, almost always challenging.

The animals in the Nature Sanctuary are a perfect example of adaptation to wildly variable conditions - far beyond what we could survive. Here, the dance of a Great Egret while ice fishing, trying to monitor several openings in the ice for fish.

Ascent to Paradise

I considered cropping this image but decided, "No, it is fine just the way it is." The photograph features a great egret (Ardea alba) ascending gracefully to the treetops from a pond below. Its ascent, to be honest, was prompted by my presence—I had encroached on a secluded bird habitat. Hoping to get a closer view, I ventured down a steep bank to the clay beach by the pond. Unfortunately, my actions had the opposite effect, and the birds flew away.

The Crossing

This image reminded me of Emanuel Leutze's 1851 painting, 'Washington Crossing the Delaware.' However, this scene takes place on the Red River, not the Delaware. The figure perched on the edge of a log is a great egret (Ardea alba), which, in my imagination, strikingly resembles someone standing magnificently at the bow of a boat. Accompanying this grand figure is a crew of three turtles toiling behind.

Step into my photo gallery, where the elegance of nature comes alive with a majestic great egret and its loyal crew of turtles navigating a peaceful river.

Tale of Two Twiglets

Okay, I know, this is not a great photograph, but I think it has an artsy look. What is happening here is, I was photographing a great egret fly across the sky and caught this image between two twiglets of a pine tree that was way off to the east of me and when the lens snapped the egret was still mostly in focus.

Elegance in the Willows

It always looks a bit odd to me when I see these large birds perched in a tree. It shouldn't seem odd though because great egrets (Ardea alba) build their nests in trees. This bird isn't nesting, but it is perched in what looks like a black willow tree. I think it flew to the tree because I was in the area.

"Males choose the display areas, where nests are later constructed. The nest itself is up to 100 feet off the ground, often over water, usually in or near the top of a shrub or tree l platforms. ..." - allaboutbirds.org

Birds of the Secluded Pond

Oh wow, here is a great egret (Ardea alba) at a secluded pond in Albany, Georgia. But wait, if you look to the left on a tree branch, you'll see what I missed when I took this photograph. There is a belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) just sitting on the branch.

Tree is Company

Here is a great egret (Ardea alba) and a couple of turtles on a log that I saw on the Red River flowing through Shreveport, Louisiana. I'm not certain of the turtle species but I think they may be two different species of turtle. Perhaps the turtle at the bottom is a red-eared slider, and the one closest to the egret a pond slider, but I'm mostly guessing. If you happen to be able to identify the turtle species, please share.

My gallery contains more that 700 images that I've chosen to share. Most are there for their visual appeal but there are a few novelty images. You can check out my gallery at:
