Cars shouldn't have a tailpipe for the exhaust. The exhaust should go straight into the passenger compartment and the vehicle should be designed so that the windows won't open while the engine is running. If you want to drive, breathe your own poison. Smell the freedom of the open road. #FuckCars

What's wrong with this picture?

Someone from the Orkney Islands Council roads department recently told me that #pavementparking is a matter for the police. You might expect someone in his position to know about the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019, and that OIC shamefully refused to enforce it and even turned down the offer of a traffic warden to help from Transport Scotland - because that was "an insult" apparently - but this isn't. Absolute clowns.

"The cost of major contracts for a motorway to Sydney’s new international airport has surged again, this time by $152 million, piling financial pressure on the project jointly funded by the federal and state governments.

"Tender documents show the estimated cost of the western section of the M12 motorway has risen by $78 million to $659 million, and the central part by $47 million to $510 million. In addition, two contracts for design work by consultants have almost doubled to $68 million.

"Greens transport spokeswoman Cate Faehrmann said the government did not question forking out millions of dollars more when costs inevitably blew out for new motorways, yet baulked at providing reliable public transport services for south-west Sydney."

“'The public needs to be reassured that the highest level of scrutiny is being applied to these massive contracts by the government, particularly when costs are regularly revised upwards at a tune of millions of dollars at a time,' she said."

A couple of thoughts on this one.

First, this is yet another example of how the neoliberal infrastructure procurement policies that Australia has imported from America and Britain have led to more expensive infrastructure.

You don't save money by cutting back on public servants, and outsourcing the design and management of big infrastructure projects to the private sector.

Secondly, the Minns government's decision to cut back on the proposed additional metro links to the Western Sydney Airport, yet keep the motorways, us looking particularly foolish.

kinetic energy scaling with the square of your speed is a bitch.

but by "infrastructure" I don't mean "safer to drive". I mean less roads to drive on, take away the option of driving from as many people as possible. Driving isn't just dangerous, it is also horribly space inefficient. I want more parks and more playgrounds in my city and less asphalt strips with 2 ton death machines.

I was out #cycling with my wife and kid yesterday. Wife was on the cargo e-bike, kid on her little Frog bike, and me on my typical road bike with an unused FollowMe attached.

A family of four walking by stopped us to ask questions about all three, clearly interested. Dude just deadpans: "You don't even have a car do you?"

"Nope, that's our car", I say, pointing to the cargo bike.

"Wild" he says.

There's real #FuckCars energy out there, but I think modelling it helps inspire others.

Many people would agree that it's absurd that children in the USA wear bulletproof vests to school, and are trained how to behave in an event of a shooting. The same people see nothing absurd in their own children wearing safety vests to school, and being trained how not to murdered by oversized trash cans on wheels.

A few months ago I wrote a few very short stories. This is one for the other #FuckCars folks in #Europe, who may or may not recognize the risk of continuing to model European cities on the American model. I've been excited to see some pulling back from that, and I hope to see a *lot* more distance between North American cities now and European cities of the future.

"How long can a people live who spoil their own crops, burn their own houses, and feed their own children to monsters?"
