Looking for CMS advice

Hey Web devs!

Do you have any suggestions, tips, opinions, dos, don’ts about headless CMSes?

I have a growing list of small/mid non-profits and collectives asking for my help to (re)make their website. I totally want to help, but I don’t have much time, especially considering that they generally have little or no funding—I would most definitely point them to @VillageOneCoop, otherwise.

Therefore, I want a super simple and replicable solution where I can copy-paste most of the code, while providing them with a stable, fast, and modern solution. I had a look at the Headless CMS section in the Jamstack website, but I need opinions from people who actually used some of that software already.

Needs

  • I want to code and configure everything using @eleventy
  • Admin interface (#WebApp) for the client to add pages and write posts
  • Static website in the front-end
  • Simple and reliable CI/CD
  • No/minimal maintenance after the first setup
  • Self-hostable (I was taking this for granted so much that I forgot to write it)
  • If it requires forge integration, it should support #ForgeJo
  • #OpenSource

Nice to have

  • Possibly using #Deno, not #NodeJS
  • Allowing the client to customize a bit their website through the admin interface, with a GUI
  • CMS app packaged on @yunohost
  • No CMS vendor lock-in
  • I’d love to write as little JavaScript as possible
  • #FreeSoftware

Absolutely not

Please, boost this and ask around! Links to videos, tutorials, and resources are welcome.

People whose perspective I would really value: @zachleat @harryfk @deno_land @jaredwhite @vanillaweb @stefan @mxbck @WeirdWriter @deadsuperhero (Sorry if I am spamming you!)

I enjoyed todays #CraftCMS newsletter - as always. I'm glad there are some 1st-party comparisons with #WordPress, especially post the Matt-down (aka Mullenweg-meltdown™). But I feel like comparing yourself with something that is so reviled by so many developers might not be doing yourself any favours. A bit of distance is probably advisable.

You fight with a pig, y'all get covered in shit 🐽

Still on the look out for work, contract or full time. Must be remote unless you have offices in Spain.

Over 20 years of experience doing: #UX/UI, design (web, product, service), front-end (#CSS, #HTML, #JS), #PHP (#kirby, #craftcms) and more recently #React, #NextJS.

My last project was NextJS with React - I did most of the things listed above. A design engineer or front-end designer role would be right up my street.

Would be nice if you do work that gives good belly feels.

I know it's early February but a project fell through for March, so I've got a pretty open schedule starting then.

I'm available for new #webDesign, #webDevelopment, and #graphicDesign projects. Whether you need a fresh website, custom development work (especially for #CraftCMS), or compelling visual designs, I'd love to discuss how I can help bring your vision to life.

Feel free to reach out to discuss your project needs!

Continued thread

While a small but disappointing number of people chose to assume I have no idea what I'm doing and that I must be unaware that WP exists (maybe, you know, have a word with yourselves?), I have been busy!

Already re-discarded #Drupal (I do wish they would let it be as cool as it could be) along with various other more modern options.

Briefly considered trying #Joomla again just for the memes.

And am now having quite a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of #CraftCMS who I think are also here on Fedi (yep, hi, @craftcms)

I sure know how to spend a Saturday afternoon... 🤓

I've been using the annoyingly-3rd party oEmbed field plugin (github.com/wrav/oembed/) for #CraftCMS for years. But now I'm trialing the Embedded Assets plugin (github.com/spicywebau/craft-em) with a dedicated embed field.

A bit more 'fiddly' but nice to treat all media consistently. Not sure what is best for my content-hungry clients. Any experience, community?

Revisiting adding an 'I' button to the #CKEditor config in #CraftCMS - it's not going well.

It isn't 1998. We all understand that an `<em>` is for emphasis and an `<i>` is for latin names. Both can and should exist at the same time. I do loads of work with scientific types who actually care about this distinction, but I'm still letting them down.
