For #insertAnInvert a print about how monarch butterflies who are fooled into laying eggs on the invasive dog-strangling vine (European swallowwort, Vincetoxicum rossicum) due to its similarities to its host plant milkweed are cursed to hatch larvae which starve and die. Dog-strangling vine unlike milkweed doesn’t serve as a food source for the caterpillars, 1/n
In April I was part of a doco about Aotearoa-NZ's entries in the 2024 #CityNatureChallenge. This is the global challenge to get city folk outside finding as many species as we can. It's great fun. Director Kelly Gilbride and the fine people at Loading Docs have done a fantastic job of capturing what the event is about.
The doco is all edited and polished and just dropped at https://loadingdocs.net/short/here-the-wild-things-are/ Check it out.
For the #SciArtSeptember prompt cursed - monarch butterflies who are fooled into laying eggs on the invasive dog-strangling vine (European swallowwort, Vincetoxicum rossicum) due to its similarities to its host plant milkweed are cursed to hatch larvae which starve and die. The frogs may be gone, but life goes on: how I regained my faith in #gardening for #wildlife
The extremes of the climate crisis mean it’s harder than ever to provide a garden haven for birds, insects and other animals. Some gardeners are questioning whether trying to do the right thing is time well spent

Spare a thought for the Burns Building pigeons.
For many decades, this 7-storey cliff-like concrete building of #LincolnUniversityNZ has been pigeon central. They'd roost here and foray out into farms.
Damaged by the 2011 earthquakes, Burns is finally being demolished. The new buildings replacing it are (purposefully) pigeon unfriendly.
This evening the pigeons were still roosting on the last small part of the building that remains. They don't know where else to go.
Raccoon Greetings for National High Five Day! This is a portrait of a former neighbour who showed up at my back door like this, to enquire as to where I had moved the compost bin. So I took his photo and made a print.
Toronto belongs to the raccoons. They just let us live here because we have good snacks.

Hello again everyone. I just moved instances so this is my reintroduction.
I'm trained as an entomologist and ecologist with some interests in statistical #ecology and #taxonomy.
Although these days I find myself working more with #UrbanEcology and #SciComm, with some projects looking at the relationship between Malaysian food, art and biodiversity, as well as some ongoing #CitizenSci initiatives to study urban fireflies.
I’m an urban ecologist, sustainability scientist, and director of the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University.
My lab studies the role of nature and greenspace in cities to find just and sustainable ways of weaving nature into walkable, livable cities.

Hello! I'm an urban ecologist working on bringing nature back into our cities.
I collaborate with governments, planners & developers, creating tools to make ecological knowledge accessible for decision making.
Follow for: mumblings about map making, enthusiastic R-usage, occasional cat content and generalised natural history excitement as I explore Australia.
