Let the Spacemen Beware, by Poul Anderson, starts as the well-worn trope of astronauts discovering a planet full of over-happy people with no fears or competitive spirit, but the sinister truth turns out to be an interesting take.
A 9/10 from me.

The Massacre of Mankind by Stephen Baxter is a true monument to The War of the Worlds, perfectly extending the story into a wider incursion by the Martians. 10/10 from me, it is a book I'm not going to forget.

'Current' faves: anything by Neal Stephenson (apart from 'Fall, or Dodge in Hell'), Peter F Hamilton's 'Night's Dawn' trilogy, James SA Corey's 'The Expanse' series. Iain M Banks' 'Culture' books, Orson Scott Card's 'Ender' series...

Amazing characters, great LGBTQ+ representation, edge-of-the-seat reading. And if you get the hardcover version, I can say from personal experience - it is soooo pretty! Amazing illustrations. It's a steeper cost than the ebook or paperback but IMO its was worth it.

Gosh, The Sirens of Titan, Kurt Vonnegut, is not the MasterWork I was expecting! Very outdated (book came out 1959) ideas about travellling around the Solar system and living on planets.

I finally read Ann Leckie's Translation State. Two thumbs up for Most Original Aliens. It was nice to read something that could surprise me.
It's interesting to see Science Fiction cross over with Amateur Radio "Brett turned the knob. "... CQ, CQ, CQ. This is Hollip Quate, caling CQ, CQ." Not exactly a legal callsign but whatever.

Just finished Catherynne M. Valente's The Past is Red. What a heartbreaking, funny, infuriating, just lovely book it is. Wonderfully written. It's going to stay with me for a while.
