“I used to think that top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address these problems, but I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy, and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation. And we scientists don’t know how to do that.” —Gus Speth.

Come to think of it. Are we undergoing a new paradigm shift today in contemporary society? All signs point to yes. But not in the enlightened Kuhnian sense where we break free from outdated dogmas. No, our #paradigmshift is more like a slow motion car crash into collective insanity. We are witnessing the collapse of traditional institutions, erosion of trust in expertise & the rise of weaponized stupidity.

Facts don't matter, reason is optional & everyone's just LARPing their reality of choice

Yesterday, I was lecturing on Deaf education. Specifically the ever evolving ways society has tried & mostly failed to teach the Deaf throughout American history. Halfway through unpacking the shift from oralism, I casually dropped #paradigmshift. Then I stopped & asked if anyone knew what that meant. Resounding silence. Blank stares. That moment? The slow creeping horror of realizing that even the most basic intellectual tools are vanishing into the void.

“The fact that the “nothing” that I propose is only nothing from the point of view of capitalist productivity explains the irony that a book called How to Do Nothing is in some ways also a plan of action. “

Reading Jenny Odell’s “How To Do Nothing” the weekend after I quit my job is the most self-affirming, gratifying reading experience I’ve ever had.
