Two things I wanna point out about the techy stuff.
Firstly, the scene always always looks brighter on screen in the night than it actually captures. In this case I ended up adding another 2 stops of exposure in post, which is very naughty. Pushing an underexposed file at high ISO is a great way to maximise noise!
Second, my preference is to edit as little as possible, and dial down the saturation. The defaults are too intense for me, and very misleading.
Time lapse from Grovfjord, with the midday sun clipping the horizon and so very very nearly popping through to greet the village.
Quick and dirty TL from last night. Gentle activity and a little extra colour before the high clouds claimed the night.
This was my favie moment of the day. Managed to find a path down to the valley floor and then a huge slab of rock was jutting out into the river. So we sat in the midst of the raging flow and shot for half an hour.
I used the 100mp pixel shift mode on my Lumix S9 to capture a very large version of the scene. Blow up included below.
It's still utterly magical that I can hold a 24MP camera handheld at 1/8th of a second and get pin sharp images. Has made me a little lazy though and not getting out the tripod nearly enough.
Getting a good look at Annapurna II today. I prefer to photograph mountains than climb them :)
Might see this one a few times more before our journey is over. Bistari bistari.
Dancing with the flame. Butter lamps at Swayambunath this morning. The light is all around us.
Back in Kathmandu today. Looking for the light. Sharing the light. Guided by the light.
Mala for Diwali. Today the streets of Kathmandu have been raucous, but the flower sellers at Kalimati have been cleaning up :)
Kalimati Market in Kathmandu is mostly a wholesale market, but with a little retail at the front and a few places for snacks :)
Some of the decorations are very simple, but others are deeply intricate and carefully prepared. It's really beautiful to watch the creation of these offerings, and the smiles that the residents share in the process.
Diwali is in full swing on the streets of Kathmandu tonight.
Mostly it's a very gentle vibe, with ornate artworks of flower petals and coloured dye decorating the streets outside shops and homes. Plus the burning lamps in tiny clay pots.
The sound of fire crackers go off every so often. But the locals are walking the streets and just enjoying the festival of lights.
Tourism is critical to the economy in Nepal. Increasingly so for monasteries as well. Many small gompas are appealing to the kindness of travellers to help fund basic resourcing for their young students (Novice Monks). Local communities struggle to provide enough for every temple.
Clothing. Books. Food. Bedding. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. This gompa is mostly for orphans.
Pretty darned good day today. Sky high in the Himalayas, enjoying apple pancakes and soaking in the sunshine at 2600m.
