Bathymetric map of offshore northern California reveals seafloor features and submarine canyons. (2020)

A multibeam bathymetric survey that produced unprecedented high resolution images of the mouth of San Francisco Bay was conducted in 2004 and 2005. The survey, performed over forty-four days by the Seafloor Mapping Lab at California State University, Monterey Bay, consisted of 1,138 track lines, 1.1 billion soundings, and covered an area of 154 km2 (60 mi2). The goals of this survey were to analyze sediment transport pathways at the mouth of San Francisco Bay and to calculate bathymetric change since the last survey was completed in 1956. The survey showed that significant bathymetric changes have occurred over the past 50 years. (~2006)

Landsat 7 satellite image - May 28th 2024 - Las Vegas - This Landsat 7 image of the Las Vegas area, acquired on May 28, 2024, marks the final image captured by the satellite over this iconic region. Taken after the conclusion of the satellite’s science mission, this image commemorates the 25th anniversary of Landsat 7. To provide a complete view, gaps in the image were filled using data from an earlier image taken on May 23, 2024. The image is shown using the shortwave infrared (SWIR), near-infrared (NIR), and red bands, offering a vivid depiction of the desert landscape, urban sprawl, and the waters of Lake Mead. This final snapshot serves as a meaningful tribute to Landsat 7’s long-standing contribution to Earth observation.
