These thin boards ⬆️ became the dividers of Box № 11, a little tray for all the various turning chisels that were flying around the shop. Another easy, functional box made from softwood scraps. The lid simply rests on the frame; held in place by two thin slats.

Yes, the bottom and top panels are glued cross-grain. Because it's easy, and I want to know if they really fail over time 😛

Finished with one coat of shellac, then paste wax. Sooo smoooth…

The box is almost quadratic, about 30 cm of width and length, but only about 5 cm high. The frame is made of four boards joined with a small dovetail joint. Thin dividers are set into the frame with dados, and they partition the inside space into five long compartments: Three thin compartments hold one long turning chisel each, and the two remaining compartments hold a variety of shorter chisels. The height of the dividers gets smaller in the middle so that the tools can easily be taken out. In this picture, the tray sits on a shelf liner on the workbench. The lid lies next to it, partly out of frame; it is made only out of a 4 mm thin panel that is stiffened by two small cross-grain slats, which prevent it from sliding off the box.
Closed box. The lid is glue up from several slats of wood, about 2 to 4 cm in width. There are screw holes in some of them.

The top edge of the frame is bevelled back slightly so that the lid can be opened easily without the need for a knob. The thin bottom panel is made from laminated boards like the lid, only slightly thicker; its endgrain also shows a large knot on one side.
