Entomological Soc. of America<p>New on Entomology Today: When an invasive insect arrives in a new region, genetic analysis for identification is a crucial step, especially as nuanced variations in populations often contribute to a species' invasive potential. <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a> <a href="https://entomologytoday.org/2025/04/08/invasion-puzzle-contrasting-success-failure-global-whitefly-thrips/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">entomologytoday.org/2025/04/08</span><span class="invisible">/invasion-puzzle-contrasting-success-failure-global-whitefly-thrips/</span></a></p>
LionelB<p>This is the shieldbug I posted yesterday, in context on a dandelion leaf. The similarity to the dazzle camouflage of battleships is striking. It easily passes as a bird dropping.</p><p>In the 18th century, naturalists (who of course needed independent means, for books, microscope, travel etc. as well as leisure time...) had many disadvantages over us. No instant communication, pattern recognition, cameras. They had to rely on distant mounted collections and sketches.</p><p>One strength they had was a much greater abundance of wildlife. But their greatest advantage was in sustained, patient observation. </p><p>To notice what is going on you have to slow right down and absorb. As with painting or drawing, the sensation of time passing changes. Other concerns are locked out. It is a kind of meditation.</p><p>We can and should learn from their focus and awareness.</p><p><a href="https://expressional.social/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/ecology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ecology</span></a></p>

Albert Cardona<p>Front legs, who needs them right? It's not only mantis who dispense of them for walking. But to be fair midgets don't really ever walk. So the sensory neurons at the tips of their legs (hence flies can taste with their feet) may here have become part of a second pair of antennae.</p><p>Microtendipes sp. midget in full double antennae mode. Christopher CooksonWhen your daily routine involves walking the dog in the same location, finding photographic inspiration can be a challenge, but today I took just a macro lens with extension tube, and ringflash.<br> The extension tube forced me to focus on stuff up close.<br> People often tend to overlook the small details in the world around them, even in familiar places.<br> It was a cool day, so I was lucky and found this moth resting on a grass seed head. I didn't move, nor did the dog rush through and disturb the grass.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/naturalhistory?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturalhistory</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/entomology?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#entomology</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/insect?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#insect</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/naturelover?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturelover</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/photography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#photography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/macrophotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#macrophotography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/pentaxk70?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#pentaxk70</a>
Entomological Soc. of America<p>New on Entomology Today: Mosquitoes drink nectar (not just blood), but do they prefer nectar from some plants over others? A new research review shows mosquitoes do indeed have nectar preferences, and they vary across groups such as Aedes, Anopeheles, Culex. Researchers say knowing mosquitoes' nectar preferences can inform placement of attractive targeted sugar baits in mosquito control efforts. <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/mosquitoes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mosquitoes</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/flowers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flowers</span></a> <a href="https://entomologytoday.org/2025/04/04/mosquito-nectar-preferences/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">entomologytoday.org/2025/04/04</span><span class="invisible">/mosquito-nectar-preferences/</span></a></p>
