After many years of building buds and dropping them, the camellias are finally flowering.
The trick? A mild winter, pots packed up with straw, and staying outside on the east balcony the entire time.
@vegplotter Excellent! I've had success growing potatoes in 3 and 5 gallon pots as well. Tagging for #SolarPunkSunday #ContainerGardening

just a tiny little bit of Bloomscrolling - the first of my oriental #helleborus started to bloom in full
My other favourite germination trick is so simple. Place the seeds on paper kitchen towels, lock them in a clear zip baggie, spray the paper towel a few times and zip the bag.
During the day I place the bags near a sunlit window sill, at night I place them near the baseboards (thanks Canadian winter:-)). No need for expensive heating pads/mats.

Mother Earth News
(Blast from the past for me...)
This video covers how to grow thriving root crops in pots. Learn how author John Moody grows up to 40 pounds of sweet potatoes in just a few square feet of containers: https://www.motherearthnews.com/videos/root-crop-container-growing-done-right-with-john-moody/
Even a balcony or shelves in front of a picture window can grow quite a bit of food, you know. Try it.
This is chaos, a chaotic method that has served me well in my newbie gardener journey.
Juice box, open it horizontally, make some drainage holes in the bottom, fill with soil, scatter seeds (no measuring, no distancing).
Once seedlings are hearty enough, I transplant them to individual containers (which once true leaves appear will go into their permanent container).
I've had success growing cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cukes, beans, peppers, onions and even potatoes in containers!
Mini-Vegetable Ideas for Small Garden Spaces
by Robin Sweetser, July 16, 2024
"Don’t let a lack of garden space keep you from growing the foods you crave! Look for vegetables and fruit bred for small spaces and containers. Here is a short list of small plants with big yields, including cherry tomatoes, Little Gem lettuce, peppers, eggplant, and more.
"If you lack enough gardening land in a sunny spot, no worries. There are so many choices for small-space gardeners. If you have a rooftime, balcony, or patio, you can also start these edibles in containers. Frankly, some of us just prefer container gardening!"

Harvested potatoes too. Second grow bag that the vine died back on. There is almost 1.5 kg / 3.3 lbs of potatoes. They were grown in $15 or more of potting soil. That's $5 a pound potatoes at the minimum. It's just an experiment, should probably grow red potatoes that get harvested early if using containers in hot summer climates.
This small yellow plum tomato is probably one of the most aesthetically pleasing tomatoes I have ever seen.
Unfortunately, it's not the variety I THOUGHT I was purchasing, so I can't even tell you what it is.
It's gorgeous though.
It's also going into a bruschetta because we've had a lot of rain this week and all the tomatoes are a bit waterlogged.
I know that classically you don't put the tomatoes on the sippets before and putting them in the oven, but I think these require a little bit of heating to draw some of the moisture out.
Definitely saving seeds, though.
I need more hours in a day to harvest and process what's coming in from the garden.
That's the first poona (Pune) kheera cucumber of the season in the first picture.
I don't know why so many of the beans look identical. These ones were Bush beans, I have pole beans that look pretty much the same. It's making my life a little difficult in sorting seeds.
Also it looks like despite the raccoons' best efforts, I'm going to get some potatoes. Maybe not as many as I would have gotten without them digging them up on a regular basis for no damn good reason.
Mind you, I only unearthed one set today. I have several other pots I need to get into. That's a warba there.
