JaakkoCan’t quite remember the exact spot where I took this, but it’s somewhere in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area during my six-week solo ski tour. Fun fact: Käsivarsi means ‘arm’ in Finnish—because if you look at a map of Finland, it kind of looks like the country has one arm reaching out. JaakkoLanding strip marks left by either a Willow Grouse or a Rock Ptarmigan. These marks are quite common in Lapland. Willow Grouses typically inhabit lower areas with downy birches, while Rock Ptarmigans are usually found higher up in rocky areas. TimAnother "Interrailing through Switzerland" post: a long trip awaited me on Friday: I took the Glacier Express from Zermatt via Brig, Andermatt, Disentis/Mustér and Chur to Tiefencastel, changed to regional trains and ended up in Davos where I stayed for another two nights. The ride on the Glacier Express was comfy and often scenic, but sadly the fog around the Oberalppass prevented me from taking pictures. At Davos I tried cross-country skiing, which I havent't done since being a small child. After roughly 10 kilometers I felt my aching muscles but had lots of fun! Winds weren’t super bad but visibility was zero and the terrain difficult to navigate safely. Sander MeijerAlthough the weather was not as beautiful anymore as the past weeks, the mountains were still calling.Conveniently by public transport we went to Sunnbüel (Kandersteg, Canton Bern) and hiked to the Gemmipass (Canton Valais). This is an ancient trading route (first mention is from the 13th century), as it is the easiest route between the Bernese Oberland and the direction Italy.The day started with still nice weather, but the clouds and especially winds picked up half-way. We could have hiked the other direction (wind from behind), but the reward of the panorama of the high mountains of Valais at the end, is a much better finish. This species is a pendant lichen that hangs from tree branches.
