😀🚲<p>What measure are we using to decide that our <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> need extra car lanes instead of <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/busLanes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>busLanes</span></a>/turn-only lanes? 😀🚲<p>"As a southeast Portland neighborhood grapples with the loss of a beloved member of their community due to a fatal traffic crash along Southeast Cesar Chavez Blvd... yet another person on foot was hit by a driver on that street yesterday." Well-past time for the outside lanes to be bus+turn-only. Don't tell me we can't afford some signs and red paint or the buses don't have cameras that could enforce it. <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VisionZero" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VisionZero</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Vision60or70something" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Vision60or70something</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://bikeportland.org/2025/02/03/woman-killed-on-se-cesar-chavez-was-tuyen-nguyen-and-shes-not-latest-victim-392727" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bikeportland.org/2025/02/03/wo</span><span class="invisible">man-killed-on-se-cesar-chavez-was-tuyen-nguyen-and-shes-not-latest-victim-392727</span></a></p>
😀🚲<p>What if honking at people on bikes was the same as calling the governor's office at (503) 378-4582 to tell her we need ODOT to put up some signs around the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Portland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Portland</span></a> metro area for the outside lanes of <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> to be for bike/bus/turn-only and maybe splash some red paint around. <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Honky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Honky</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/pdxBikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pdxBikes</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/orPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>orPol</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateDenial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDenial</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/WithDemsLikeThese" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WithDemsLikeThese</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/orDems" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>orDems</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ODOTGTFOpdx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ODOTGTFOpdx</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VisionZero" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VisionZero</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateAction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateAction</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/BusLanes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BusLanes</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.oregon.gov/gov/Pages/share-your-opinion.aspx" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">oregon.gov/gov/Pages/share-you</span><span class="invisible">r-opinion.aspx</span></a></p>
😀🚲<p>Despite a little rain, I still managed to transport a child up a hill to a thing five miles away and carry a load of groceries up a hill to get home. Actual obstacles to replacing 10-mile car trips with <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/eBikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eBikes</span></a> are still only imaginary, political / the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/FakeScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FakeScience</span></a> excuses of state highway departments' <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/trafficEngineers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trafficEngineers</span></a>, and <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/honky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>honky</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/drivers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>drivers</span></a>. <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateDenial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDenial</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/transportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transportation</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ODOTGTFOpdx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ODOTGTFOpdx</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/leaveTheCarAtHome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leaveTheCarAtHome</span></a></p>
😀🚲<p>Sometimes this is a kinda quiet break from the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> noise but I'm inclined to just take the lane for that mile or so if I'm getting honked at on the side streets anyway.</p>
😀🚲<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@PDXDemSocialist" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>PDXDemSocialist</span></a></span> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> = street + road and not doing either well. We lack the space for such a cross-section in many places but we could certainly make the outside lanes of every 4+ lane street be bus+turn-only/"bikes may use full lane". That gives good access to destinations by all modes, makes crossing safer, reduces speeding, &amp; makes turning in or out in a car easier. Ultimately the bikeway network will be on side streets that don't go thru in a car, diverters force turns, reduce speed.</p>
😀🚲<p>...show me how you allocate and maintain your street space and I'll tell you what you value. <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateDenial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDenial</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/LegalizeBikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LegalizeBikes</span></a></p>
😀🚲<p>Full-length wet video riding the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/UmbrellaBike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UmbrellaBike</span></a> from Hillsdale in SW <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Portland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Portland</span></a> to <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Beaverton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Beaverton</span></a> on <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/bhHwy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bhHwy</span></a>, with some creative bypass around Crash Corner and the rest of the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ODOTGTFOpdx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ODOTGTFOpdx</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a>-y section</p><p>The bike lane ends not long after the county line, thanks governor, with dems like these, who needs <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateDenial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDenial</span></a>! <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/VisionZero" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VisionZero</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/BusLanes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BusLanes</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/pdxBikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pdxBikes</span></a></p><p><a href="https://urbanists.video/w/c2ZFXAW2FC9xQS3cYQdYxU" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">urbanists.video/w/c2ZFXAW2FC9x</span><span class="invisible">QS3cYQdYxU</span></a></p>
😀🚲<p>But the real idiots are the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/trafficEngineers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trafficEngineers</span></a> counting these excess lanes as additional throughput when in reality they're the source of crashes and congestion. A quick <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/BusLanes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BusLanes</span></a> reconfiguration and traffic would flow better, turning would be easier, the bus would run on time, and finding that the bike lane suddenly ends or becomes unusable with debris and a clogged storm drain wouldn't be such a big deal. Half of car trips are less than 3 miles, many lead here. <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/InducedDemand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InducedDemand</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a></p>

😀🚲<p>Meanwhile, designating the outside lanes of this and our other four/five-lane <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/stroads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stroads</span></a> (high-crash corridors) as bus+turn-only would help mitigate many of the problems by reducing the speed and proximity of car traffic to the bike lanes. <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/BusLanes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BusLanes</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/JFDI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JFDI</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/ClimateActionNow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateActionNow</span></a></p>
