Signalspielplatz<p>Hello world!</p><p>We are the work group "Signalspielplatz" ('signal playground') from Northern Germany.</p><p>We brought our first prototype of a DIY POCSAG pager and transmitter to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/38c3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>38c3</span></a>, where we took the opportunity to test the setup under congress conditions, as well as present the pager (link down below).</p><p>Our next step will be to test an improved prototype at EasterHegg 22. More updates and a website coming soon, so follow us to stay informed.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pager" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pager</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pocsag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pocsag</span></a></p><p><a href="https://events.ccc.de/congress/2024/hub/en/event/paging-38c3-how-we-built-an-in-complete-diy-pocsag/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">events.ccc.de/congress/2024/hu</span><span class="invisible">b/en/event/paging-38c3-how-we-built-an-in-complete-diy-pocsag/</span></a></p>
Charles U. Farley<p>Has anyone made a <a href="https://retro.social/tags/Signal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Signal</span></a> or <a href="https://retro.social/tags/XMPP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>XMPP</span></a> to <a href="https://retro.social/tags/LoRa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LoRa</span></a> gateway or similar?</p><p>Encrypted messages over <a href="https://retro.social/tags/POCSAG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>POCSAG</span></a> using an <a href="https://retro.social/tags/RTLSDR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RTLSDR</span></a> receiver or hacking a pager might be even better, but it would need to be compact and battery powered. Doesn't need to be as small as even an old pager, but it should fit in a small purse.</p><p>The general idea is to transmit only when sending a message, unlike cellphones which can transmit at any time. I used to have a setup like this; I carried a POCSAG pager and kept my cellphone turned off most of the time. But messages weren't encrypted, and it required getting people to use two different methods for getting in touch with me.</p>
