As demand for swim lessons increases in Metro Vancouver, some turn to private pools
Some parents in Metro Vancouver say they are turning to private swimming instructors amid a growing demand for lessons at public pools this spring — with one municipality looking to fill the gap by offering swim lessons through schools.

Ah, the classic tale of a coder thinking #SIMD would make their code fly 🚀, only to discover it trips over its own feet 👟. Our hero's memory seems as patchy as their #benchmarks, but fear not, the valuable lesson here is clear: #optimization is just a synonym for #headache. 🤦‍♂️

750 days in a row of Duolingo. As I bounce between Spanish and French with a smattering of Portuguese, irish and the occasional music, it’s giving me a good foundation. Immersion is, of course, always the best, but one step at a time.
And my students are good at helping me add specific sewing related vocabulary if they know it, otherwise we use the English term. #language #lessons

More #lessons from the #bike and #train trip.

5. I thought the mileage of the bicycle trails along the beachfront of Santa Barbara would take up all my allotted time. it turns out, your speed of travel on a bike in Santa Barbara is SO MUCH faster than walking AND driving (and so much easier than trying to deal with traffic lights and parking) that I crossed town three times while I was there.. and could have actually have seen the whole town on bike. In fact, the amount of time you spend looking for parking in Santa Barbara (having done that before) far exceeds the time required to travel by bicycle. If you are physically capable, bike > car in Santa Barbara downtown. (cont). #SantaBarbara

4. Here is the bicycle area of the Pacific Surfliner. You may need to remove the panniers and stow them if there are a lot of bikes. Key thing is to know which side of the train the bicycle train is! In my area, it's always the southern most car. Otherwise you will be running to find the right place! (Cont.) #lessons #amtrak #bike

3. Unlike plane travel, train travel (for me) includes A TON MORE CONVERSATIONS with strangers. I ended up in a long conversation waiting for the train with a fellow waiting for his commuter bus before I had even left, where he saw I was on a bike trip and talked about how much he loved bikes, how addictive it was, and his recent bicycling trip up and down the Ventura River trail (the bike path between Ventura, California and Ojai, California). He told me HOW MUCH he loved that trail, and how they have paved it, and how many times he has gone up and down it.

Then, on the train up, got the life story of another guy with a bike...

So, #lessons from this trip (Amtrak -> Destination -> Amtrak Return)

1. Need to remember that Amtrak is aspirational travel, i.e. you want to go where your ticket is taking you, but you PROBABLY won't get there at the time it says. i.e. You'll get there EVENTUALLY, not without adventure and delays, but at least there is a bathroom on board.

2. Amtrak does allow bikes, but it is on a ROUTE-BY-ROUTE basis, and you need reservations. There is a single car with bicycle racks (on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, approx. officially 6 spots per train, though one of the trains had enough space for 8 bikes). They don't seem to check, but if you run out of room, could be an issue.

Most useful thing to have in reserve (as usual) here -- wildfire outbreak here in my county, and almost all the online radio feeds went down (due to power outages). I was lucky enough NOT to lose power/Internet, and had several systems almost ready to deploy, and put them online, allowing folks from out of the area to help with radio relaying (which can be very helpful when your normal relayers are worrying about whether or not to evacuate themselves!). The Broadcastify feeds and alternates were all down. #lessons #disasters

Why I am leaning towards "mylar balloon" at the moment:

The clearing there is bushes that are about 2-3 feet tall. So, in order to cast a shadow like you see in the original image, would have to be ON TOP of the bushes. A rock (or skull) would not cast that kind of shadow in that terrain, unless it were on top of a bush. Those bushes are not seasonal, they are there all year long.
